hypothetically speaking, couldn't a laptop be wired with certain chips and broken circuits/shorts to overheat and ultimately cause a small explosion?

no explosives would be needed, just "faulty" electrical equipment so it would be undetectable before and maybe even after the epxlosion

You wouldn't need the whole laptop, just the battery.

im obviously not planning an attack. im just pointing out the fact that laptops being allowed on planes or pretty much anywhere is a huge risk.

A laptop battery contains roughly the stored energy of a hand grenade, and if shorted it ... hey! You can't arrest me if I prove your rules inconsistent!
