Energy
Budget Tax Cuts
Lift American Spirit
And it's really, really pathetic.
She was using those "notes" to answer this question: "What are the top three things that have got to be done?"
If you can't identify your basic goals without glancing at your hand, you have failed. And it's not like she was trying to be concise and organized and making sure she mentioned them in a certain order or something. She was just going on like, "Oh shit, I forgot what I'm supposed to pander to these losers with. Lemme keep rambling and trying to sound smart until I can subtly look at my palm." 2/7/2010 1:29:35 PM |

It’s amazing to me that anyone can think Palin is remotely qualified to be the leader of a national movement.
It seems to me that her only goal is to be able to say “I told ya’ so” to people who in the past have doubted her. She has a HUGE chip on her shoulder I think.
Come to think of it, she is exactly like Peggy Hill from King of the Hill... 2/7/2010 1:33:28 PM |

Exactly.
They act like Obama invented the teleprompter or something.
This is solely due to Fox News/Limbaugh writing their narrative, as Stewart would say.

try to follow my logic here, its not rocket surgery -i am not saying there is a problem with using a teleprompter -obama has received a lot of criticism for using one, which is retarded and i don't think i need to explain why -many of these critics support sarah palin et al -sarah palin wrote notes on her hand telling us that she knew the softball question in advance but still needed notes -this is a perfectly adequate response to the "teleprompter president" critics2/8/2010 8:48:56 AM |

well to you the easy rebuttal is obama at his GOP Q&A with no teleprompter. if you haven't watched it you should.
the fact is that every president since teleprompters were invented has used teleprompters
(because this thread is to "teleprompter haters" not to "obama haters." reading comprehension)

I sincerely hope that the anti-teleprompter narrative of Fox News can keep it's footing into the next election.
I say that, because I would guess that one reason she used her hand instead of a teleprompter is because of that very narrative.
Oh how I hope that 2012 shows a variety of GOP candidates desperately trying to use high school cheating techniques just to have their talking points handy during speeches, while Obama simply reads the speech written for the occasion off a teleprompter and sounds far more coherent.
Granted, I don't think it'd have an impact on the vast majority of people's opinions. Anyone who makes a fuss over a teleprompter has already made up their mind anyway. Still, it would make for some very amusing television, especially during the primaries as a state full of GOP candidates scramble to read the back of their hands, bottom of their hats, underneath their ties, and whatever other location they can hide notes.

Im by no means a Palin apologist, but how do you compare a few words scribbled on a hand to an entire speech in a teleprompter? 2/8/2010 2:51:41 PM |
Lumex All American 3666 Posts user info edit post |
She wasn't making a speech, she was answering questions. She uses a teleprompter for speeches. I doubt Obama has written notes on his hand for answering questions.
That said, I don't think the hand-notes are a big deal. Just clumsy of her to show them. 2/8/2010 3:31:12 PM |
Boone All American 5237 Posts user info edit post |
I wouldn't think it's a big deal under normal circumstances. I write on my hand all the time ("eggs, bread, cheese," or "room 301 @3:30").
But have you seen the video? She stumbles during the questions, then looks down at those three points for an answer. They were literally crib notes.
The part that's so humorous is that it was only six words. She had the need to write down six words in order to remember them. Six items.
Quote : | "That is a very weak argument. Have you ever spoke in front of large groups without a script? I'm Ron Burgundy?" |
I've never spoken to 600 people, but I speak to ~120 people now and then, and I speak to 32 people every day. If you know what you're talking about, it's easier without the script.
A prompt now-and-then (powerpoint slide or notecard bullet) helps you stay on track if it's a long speech, but the interviewer's questions served that role.2/8/2010 3:50:31 PM |

one surefire way to gurantee Obama a second term, is have Palin run on any ticket whatsoever.
if she goes on the Repub ticket, almost every moderate and independent voter will vote Dem, as we did the first time around. if she goes on soome kooky far right ticket, she will dilute the right wing vote.
matter of fact, the longer she stays in the public eye, the more the centrist vote automatically looks to the left. part of it is visceral reaction, part of it is empirical evidence from the last time we had a mentally challenged person in office. 2/8/2010 4:39:01 PM |

I'm a Republican, I loathe Obama, and I voted for McCain/Palin but I agree with every bit of this if she wants to help out the Republican cause she needs to just go away, same with Limbaugh. By and large, these two aren't at all representative of the majority of conservatives but liberals and the media love to frame them as the poster children for the Republican party because of just how much they do turn off moderates and independents.
That said, 6 words scribbled on a hand is hardly comparable to reading every word you speak in public off of a teleprompter.2/8/2010 7:23:22 PM |

you realize that she was reading her speech, right? she had to write those things on her hand because she didn't have a podium for the Q and A.
Also, you're right that the fact that she needed to write those things on her hand for those softball questions is not the same as reading a teleprompter. it is entirely worse. 2/8/2010 7:39:52 PM |
agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
this wasn't just a softball question. It was a question about what the Republicans top-3 priorities should be "when" they take over the House and Senate. You know, the kind of question that defines you as a political figure. The kind of question a Presidential candidate should be able to write a book about. The kind of question she should be able to answer in her sleep.
but nope - she can't even keep in her tiny little pea-brain three simple phrases. 1) Energy 2) Budget Tax Cuts 3) Lift American Spirits
it's also interesting that she apparently initially wrote "budget cuts" and replaced it with "tax cuts." That little slip alone says a lot about her character - she doesn't care about actual budget changes. She would rather just talk about tax cuts, because that's the most sure-fire way to excite a republican crowd. Pretty much exactly what Bush did - cut taxes, but don't follow it up with budget cuts.
and not to mention - anyone who's comparing this to reading notes or teleprompter for a speech. It's one thing to dictate what you or someone else has written before hand for a speech - it's not like Obama is trying to fool anyone into thinking he's just winging all these speeches. But ask any middle school who writes something on the palm of their hand, and tries to look at it by cupping their hand in their lap and pretending to look down naturally to read it, and they will tell you the explicit purpose of writing on your hand is to try to hide what was written from somebody else.
It would be another thing entirely if she had a set of note-cards in her lap that she referred to, in plain view of the interviewer and the audience. Now, it would still call into question to validity of the interview format (i.e. was she given the questions before hand or was it an impromptu interview as the format suggested) but at least she wouldn't be hiding the fact that she was using notes.

not to nitpick but...
all politics and abilities of Palin and Obama aside, it almost seems like Palin is a better public speaker...one person has a few notes, literally a few...the other reads many sentences and paragraphs from a teleprompter
now obviously Obama comes across as a better public speaker than Palin...its not even close...just listen to each of them
but comparing a few notes on your hand, to a teleprompter full of an entire speech, is like saying "Attn: people criticizing someone for 3 dozen speeding tickets: this person on the other side of the aisle just got a single speeding ticket! Owned!"
