USDA ends livestock tracking program

Quote :
"The Obama administration is killing a national livestock tracking program that never got off the ground amid widespread complaints by farmers and ranchers.

Instead, all cattle, hogs and poultry that cross state lines sometime during their life - which includes much of Iowa's hog production and more than a million beef cattle yearly - would be required to participate in some type of state tracking program.

Nothing's more American than unregulated yet subsidized farming.

Seems like a good thing overall. I do find myself amused that one of the objections to the program was that farmers were concerned about being sued if contaminated product was traced to them. Such would be the danger of distributing contaminated product. I see no reason why they should be protected from a lawsuit in that instance.

Equally I am amused that the meat packers are annoyed that the program was canceled because the blame comes to them first. If they are truly concerned, then they should be tracking where they get their meats from and where it goes. It is not the government's job to do their record keeping for them.
