"Kabuki Lady Macbeth by Karen Sunde, conceived by Shozo Sato

February 16–20 at 8 p.m., February 21 at 3 p.m.

Meredith College's Studio Theatre, Jones Hall

$5 w/ student ID (NCSU and Meredith)

A retelling of Shakespeare’s story, this drama presents the Bard’s tale from its heroine’s point of view, exploring her desires and motives. Though witches called Light, Shadow and Destiny lead us through the tale and warn that balancing light and dark, brave and gentle, is the way to a happy life, they wickedly midwife lady M’s transformation from gentle lady to snake demon. “Rise. Look to the sun. When evil is set loose, it will be someone’s destiny to bleach the earth.”"

Shakespeare is better in the original Klingon.

True, but the odds of some girls from some podunk college pulling off an incredibly complex play in an even more experimental fashion are pretty slim. This just isn't the sort of production I see being successful on a small scale. It's nothing against the actors, it's just a giant pill to swallow, that's all.

is it being done by meredith people? or is it a touring group that is just stopping in at meredith? those costumes look fairly professional for a small college production.

So is this Macbeth, exactly as it's written, aside from the Japanese setting? That would be awesome if pulled off well.

I just assumed it was performed by students based on the location, obvious feminist perspective, and cheap price.

It is college actors (girls from Meredith, guys from State), but Meredith college has a reputation of pumping out professionals.

The first picture I posted is from the original professional production in Chicago, so no our costumes are not that elaborate, but still pretty cool. I'll post some pics if I get my hands on any.

The script is not the same as Shakespeare's. Kabuki style speech and movement wouldn't support the original script. This script is written in a way that it would be spoken in a Japanese theater...except that its in English. The character list also differs. The only cast is Macbeth, Lady M, 3 witches, Duncan, Macduff, and a couple of servants (it is a trend in modern theater to use as few cast members as possible).

Yeah, modifying Shakespeare so heavily is definitely a house-of-cards kind of scenario. I'd still probably see it if I had time, but unless something changes this week, I don't.
