Dry Tortugas was good fun. Just don't fall off the moat and get eaten by one of the sharks that swim the perimeter. If you camp take as much crap as you can since there's nothing there and everybody else does. 2/21/2010 6:20:14 PM |

If you're flying down, def rent a car for a day and go to another Key. For us, Key West started to feel small on the 5th day. There's a couple of other state parks to check out. We went to Big Pine to spot Key Deer, and we saw 5 which was awesome.
If it was warmer, we would've kayaked and snorkeled. It was pretty chilly everyday except 2, but was very windy the whole time and the idea of getting wet (or the potential of it) in 60 degree water to re-enter the cool air was not appealing.
When we left yesterday, the air traffic controller quipped, "we'll make sure the heater's fixed next time" heh 3/4/2010 3:21:53 PM |

We went in December and stayed at the Crown Plaza La Concha which is right on Duvall St (the main street in Key West)
it can be kind of pricey. I believe we paid $220 for the "Tennesse Williams Suite" which was a one bedroom suite with a pullout sofabed.
There are tons of bed and breakfast type places on Duvall St.

If you are looking for a quiet laid back place to stay try, http://www.blueparrotinn.com/index.htm Otherwise there are a bunch of small rental cottages available from Bone Island Vacation Rentals (the sanctuary), though try to get one of the garden units, the street side ones are not as nice. 7/7/2011 8:35:03 AM |

yes i did that and it was amazing! I dint like the para sailing because i couldnt do it solo and had to tag along with some dude! Other than that, it was amazing. Also the captian of the boat was from michigan and when i told him i was from detroit, he let me drink beer all day long and not just on the way back. I will be going back this year hopefully!!!
i am vegetarian and wasnt expecting much from the lunch but they actually had vegetarian options for lunch which was great!

as far as restaurants go, i really enjoyed
7fish and the Flaming Buoy Filet Co.
when I was there at the end of Feb.
i recommend them as more local fine dining vice the en masse places you find down by sloppy joes, etc. 7/7/2011 3:25:24 PM |

currently trying to decide between a sweet Marriott "beachside" place (that i got a great deal on) that has free hourly shuttles to the city (or i could just take taxis, its just ~3 miles), or some boutiquey B&B type places downtown...but there's tons of them and I'd pretty indecisive 7/8/2011 4:18:59 PM |

went with a place called the "Island City House"
what restaurants/bars should i make sure we hit up?
as far as activities i heard the fort was a little underwhelming...can anyone confirm that?
i will have a rental car, so any activities that take driving are no problem.] 8/1/2011 4:28:33 PM |

Later I recommended La Creperie.
Top two that I've bolded from my previous post...Dry Tortugas and El Siboney. Definitely. Fort Jefferson/Dry Tortugas is NOT underwhelming. It's gorgeous, quiet, and I hope to camp there next time we go. Fort Zachary Thomas can be skipped...perhaps that's which one they meant when they said it was underwhelming.

I'm going down with a bunch of guys for a bachelor party. What are some good restaurants that are casual with fresh seafood that could handle a rowdy crowd? 6/5/2012 11:23:28 AM |
Agent 0 All American 5677 Posts user info edit post |
it sounds like you just want to stay on duval. probably the north end of the key. there are some more popular (touristy) but still good seafood places there, better than sloppy joes, but not where you'll look like an asshole for being "a rowdy crowd". the places i mentioned in the thread previously are definitely not the kind of places you are looking for. they're more upscale, expensive and intimate dining options.
probably just stick to duval and it sounds like it will fit your groups needs. yeah it's cliche i guess, but fuck it, it's a bachelor party so you probably don't care. if you do need a bit of an upscale place one night, I enjoyed Blackfin Bistro, which is toward the southern end of Duval. It has a pretty solid selection of fresh seafood and steaks, good wine list, white table cloths, etc... 6/5/2012 11:31:30 AM |

^^thanks.. We are all mature enough, and probably could do a finer place if it was just a few of us. but us together in one group would probably be hell on a waitress. We are staying a block off Duval and other than a fishing trip and some other things we'll probably be planted around there for most of the trip. 6/5/2012 1:06:40 PM |

Check my post above...has restauarants you'd all be able to handle. The raw bar ESP for rowdy activity. There's a shack I need to look up the name of, but also good even though it didnt make my list.
However, if you go down there and don't eat at el siboney I will cut you. Hear me? CUT YOU
Green parrot is outdoor dining and they had a band while we were there. So it's like a casual finer seafood dining experience. They could prolly handle you though.
Capt Tony's was our fave bar.
There's another place along the water near the raw bar I would recommend as well. I'll look up that name too. I *think* they had food--we only had drinks.
