Mercedes performance division AMG has just announced its new biturbo V8 engine, making 536-hp and 590 ft-lbs of torque (563-hp and 664 ft-lbs of torque with the AMG Performance Package). Designed to replace the 6.2-liter AMG mill, the M157 engine will first appear in the 2011 S63, where it will also make a decent 22.4 mpg and carry the luxurious beast to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. Top speed for the new S63 will be rated at 186 mph when equipped with the AMG performance package. After, Mercedes will begin to use the engine in all of its AMG 63 models, including in the SLS, where it is expected to get even more power.
In the S63, the new V8 Biturbo will use Mercedes’ AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission, which first debuted on the SL63. In “M” Manual mode, it will not automatically downshift or upshift, even at redline, to give the drive optimum control.
Torque for the new engine is available at very low revs, with 494 ft-lbs on ta at just 1500 rpm, while 590 ft-lbs are delivered at 2400 rpm. As for the AMG Performance Package models, 645 ft-lbs comes on at 2000 rpm, while 664 ft-lbs starts at 2500 rpm.
Engine highlights include direct-injection with piezo electric injectors and the use of a start/stop system to conserve fuel while the car isn’t in motion in a new Controlled Efficiency mode." |
I can't believe they're rolling out this engine already. Seems like they just introduced the 6.2 NA V8 back in 2007?! Talk about blowing through cash, sheesh. I guess fuel mileage standards demanded this.
*Also, I would have thrown this in another AMG thread but they were all expired.3/9/2010 1:40:11 PM |

That engine is badass!!!! Thats more powerfull than the new V8 in the 550i. But BMW has better packaging. Their tubo\manifold lies in the middle of the 'V'. I really like this new direction of high horse poiwer, good torque, good fuel economy. The BMW N54 and N55 Turbo I-6 engine is nice too. 3/9/2010 4:31:34 PM |

Current E63 AMG... the sound of the engine will turn you on:

Damn, do the M5/M3 sound like that? They have more of a screeching high freq exhaust, right? The AMGs sound totally badass... like American muscle. 3/27/2010 5:28:14 PM |

The two C63 AMGs I drove with at Roebling Road last fall sounded absolutely amazing. Totally badass. They had aftermarket headers, but stock exhaust and mufflers. Nonetheless, they registered 106dB on the track's sound meter. Seriously, they sounded like NASCAR stockers, lol. 3/29/2010 12:44:40 PM |

New [non-AMG] MB engines:
http://www.worldcarfans.com/110050726065/new-mercedes-engines-46-liter-v8-biturbo-and-35-liter
(for the 350 and 500 models)
Quote : | "The numbers on the new V6: 306 PS (301 bhp / 225 kW), up from the previous 272 PS (268 bhp / 200 kW). Torque is dialed up to 368 Nm (272 lb-ft) from the former 350 Nm (258 lb-ft). CO2 emissions are 177 g/km.
The engine will be introduced in the upcoming S350 this fall and then on the CL350 a few months later.
The new 4.6 liter V8 comes with twin-turbocharging that delivers 435 PS (429 bhp / 320 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque.
The V8 will debut in the CL500 this fall too. Also with stop/start technology, it features about 22 percent better fuel economy than the previous, larger block, 5.4 liter V8 that it will replace. CO2 emissions are also a very good 225 g/km for an engine this powerful." |

it's crazy how 20 years after all the original twin turbo cars--the Porsche 959, Subaru Legacy Twin Turbo, Rx-7 and Cosmo, Supra, 3000GT, 300zx, Skyline GT-R--twin turbos are back in force from the OEM's. Twin turbos were almost dead 5 or 6 years ago. Only a few models had them. 5/8/2010 11:15:17 PM |

Anyone else find it funny how no one is doing sequential anymore... Turbo tech has advanced so much with twinscroll housings, ball bearing turbos, light weight compressors and turbines that they don't need them anymore... The only reason they do two turbos is so they don't have hot side piping going all over the engine bay. 5/9/2010 10:05:29 AM |

yeah seems like all the sequential turbo systems were developed in the late 80s/early 90s and then were slowly phased out until the 2JZ Aristo/GS300 was discontinued. 5/10/2010 10:04:57 AM |
