I might be moving back to Charlotte after graduation but the city has changed so much I don't know where the good and affordable places are.
I wouldn't mind somewhere close to the Arboretum, but is that a good idea? 3/12/2010 12:27:54 AM |

Do you know where you're going to be working and what type of crowd you want to be around?
Arboretum is ok, but it's going to be a majority of families. If you live in that neighborhood at the corner of Providence and 51, there are some young people that live in the condos though.
I live in Southpark and like it a lot. For young people, i'd recommend the following:
- Southend - Dilworth - Uptown - Plaza Midwood - Southpark 3/12/2010 12:31:30 AM |

I'll be working on Providence Rd, sort of near the intersection at Fairview.
South Park would be pretty close, but I'm worried it would be too pricey. What is the rent like?
I should also mention that my parents and a lot of my friends are in Weddington, so I'll be heading out there frequently. I wouldn't mind being somewhere in between, which is why I thought of Arboretum first.

I think he was referring to the Rosewood Condominiums on the adjacent corner.

That is true, as do many other cities. But just realize it's in the university area, a solid 20 minutes from where you are asking about.

I prefer the flying saucer here in Charlotte over the Raleigh saucer.
I live in Highland Creek - it is pretty affordable and the largest planned neighborhood in Charlotte. The bad - its about 2 miles from Concord Mills. The good - you have 4 huge swimming pools, gym, parks, greenways, golf course, restaurants..... 3/12/2010 8:57:04 AM |

If you're going to be working at Fairview and Providence then my neighborhood would be a good place to live. Look up Bennington Woods, streets are Clavell Lane and Gray Gate Lane.
I would also say look at Strawberry Hill at the corner of Fairview/Sardis and Providence. I know that a lot of people live near there when first moving to Charlotte, it's in walking distance to a great Thai place, Fresh Market, Rite Aid, Red Rocks and a couple other little places. 3/12/2010 9:18:41 AM |

There are a lot of good houses for rent between Park and South, Woodlawn and East. It's a solid location. South is a little ghetto, Park is a little fancy. You can find plenty of places between the two that are pretty good. I live there now and haven't had any complaints. There's the redneck house down the street who sit on their front porch and drink beer too much. There are the lesbians next door (nurse and landscaper). There's the young professional across the street. Great location. Close to the light rail line, close to Freedom Park, close to a couple of grocery stores, close to the Dilworth/East Blvd area that seems to be popular for young professionals. Easy access to the Park/Fairview area. (Shit, I just realized you said Providence/Fairview, not Park. So that's another 10 minutes from your work.) Marsh, Melbourne, Hartford, Auburn all have plenty of places for rent. They probably average $800 for a 2 bedroom house with a fenced in backyard. 3/14/2010 9:19:38 PM |

To be more specific I'm working at the Jewish Community Center, any of you who have driven up and down Providence enough times should know where it is.
I'll most likely be on my own so an apartment would probably be better than renting a house. 3/15/2010 1:32:05 AM |

Knowing that, you should definitely live at Strawberry Hill to start with. Or Camden Fairview:

Haha. After my family moved from upstate NY I lived in the Charlotte area growing up. Lived in Huntersville from 2-7 and then in Harrisburg from 7-college My parents definitely liked being slightly out of the busiest parts of town but still being close to everything. Plus, building an all brick home on over an acre of land (still in a neighborhood though) in Harrisburg 18 years ago has really paid off for them with all the growth pushing toward that area now. Even with home prices low right now, their house is worth over 2x what they paid for it (and it is almost paid off).3/15/2010 9:04:01 AM |

Back and forth from Huntersville to uptown Charlotte would be a deal killer for me. No way I'd move there no matter how nice it is if I had to go to work and back anywhere between 6 - 8:30am and 4 - 6:30pm.

Considering I'm a northern Virginia commuter that grew up around terrible traffic, I suppose I'm numb to the issue of traffic. Plus compared to the dc metro area, huntersville might be a little overcrowded but I neverthought it was unbearable by any means. 3/15/2010 1:19:31 PM |

one area of park road is overcome during the summer months with a bad sewage stinch. I believe it's right there where park road intersects with Tyvola/Fairview. If you are coming from 77 those apartments on the left have to be ruined by it. 3/18/2010 8:03:39 AM |

It's actually not that bad. I live at Park Rd. and Archdale. It's a water processing facility, never noticed the smell to be unbareable. 3/18/2010 8:33:36 AM |

It's actually right off the Tyvola side right at Park. The smell is pretty damned bad once in a while, but most times I don't notice it driving by there twice a day.

The Park corridor is a nice place. South of Tyvola/Fairview is much more of a family feel. Lots of 4 bed houses that will cost $1500/month. Some nice apartment complexes there as well. The intersection with East (Dilworth area) is a little more hip, a little older. No idea about prices, but walking distance to shops and restaurants usually jacks the price up a bit. There are a lot of smaller places and duplexes in that neighborhood. Between those two areas, around the Woodlawn intersection, is also a solid area. Cheaper and smaller, but not ghetto, and still convenient to shopping and food. Lots of 2-bed houses for rent for cheap. I live near the Marsh/Park intersection and am pleased with it. It's just a small little neighborhood, but it's amazingly close to uptown. I can walk to the light rail in 10 minutes and be uptown 10 minutes after that. Or just drive 3 miles there.3/18/2010 10:26:52 AM |
