Who's it for?
Younger brother. Sophomore at State. Living with me in North East Raleigh. Doesn't have a car. I'm tired of dropping him off on campus every morning before I go to work and picking him up afterwards.

Price Range
Less than $7K (mom and dad are paying for it)

Specs/Style
Reliable. Decent gas mileage. But, "cool" enough to pick up chicks/friends with. Avoiding a fixer upper, 'cause he ain't got a job or money. Preferably a sedan, but coupe is fine. Trying to avoid larger cars for the sake of gas mileage.

I've been looking, but having a hard time choosing. Plus, I know you garage folks are so opinionated that this thread will blow up with responses in no time, giving me more options to choose from that I might have missed otherwise.

Please be specific (i.e., craigslist ad, ebay listing, links, etc...). Would like to purchase in the next few weeks (during spring break).

Get the newest civic your budget will allow. Sell it when you graduate for 2k less and buy your 996.

Go ahead and lock his thread. Problem has been solved.

^^I'm slightly biased, but I'd say go for the Integra coupe.

The V6 Accord Coupe and Maxima won't get great gas mileage so you might not want to consider those.

Does he need an automatic?
cause this is pretty close to the kind of cars I look for; mid size sedans with a manual trans fit the bill all around. Decent gas mileage, functional, and slightly sporty.

I actually prefer to trade miles for features.. a car is a depreciating asset anyways. Having things like leather, sunroof, etc will make the car have a cool factor.. no one's going to look straight to the odometer when they get in the passenger seat.

cars I've owned/liked:
97-03 maxima
E36 BMW
B5 Audi A4
Mazda 6

I actually just got the mazda6s as the new daily driver for around that price and it's a nice all-around car so far. It's probably the lowest mileage car I've ever owned at 90,000. I just take care of the cars, keep 'em clean, and I have yet to not keep a car past 200,000 miles with little issue.

You can get a 00+ Celica or RSX for that amount of money, even the sporty options. Get that before a integra.

Accord sedan or coupe. I can't think of wanting anything else as a college student besides something that's reliable, that doesn't eat up gas, and that you can still fit your friends in.

Go for a civic to save him a little more $$$ on gas.

[Edited on March 12, 2010 at 5:43 PM. Reason : Tell him to get a job on campus, too. Boy needs to pay for his gas somehow!]
