So I am starting to get nervous about finding an internship for this summer, i'm looking for something in environmental engineering specifically in water resources or water runoff mitigation. a few of the positions won't make decisions till the end of the month, but i applied for a couple others awhile back with no luck and am getting nervous.

i've been trying to navigate the various websites to look for federal/state/county opportunities but they all have terrible sites. does anyone know of any internship opportunities or other resources for finding federal/county/state internships? (or any internships)

I did this for two of the summers I had at state. Not a bad way to learn a lot and they accept everybody.

yeah, thats one of the few i was able to find on any of the sites. do they just determine your position based on your major/ experience? i wouldn't mind working for the dot as long as i was in a field i like.

The EPA is a regulatory agency.

Most Environmental Engineers/Water Resource Engineers are in the consulting business and do designs for sewer/water treatment facilities, landfills, dams, etc.

Some local places to look into:

John R McAdams Company (Durham)
Horvath and Associates (Durham)
Schnabel
ECS, Carolinas (Raleigh)
Froehling and Roberson (Raleigh)
Falcon Engineering (Raleigh)
Kleinfelder (Morrisville)
ESP Associates (Cary)

the EPA has very few opportunities listed on their site and usajobs doesn't really have anything. i know that the epa often uses third parties to hire interns and i've got a contact with a resume of mine if anything comes up.

They pretty much assign you wherever. If you don't like the location when they send you an offer, contact them and ask if you have any other options. They almost had me driving 40 minutes each day to a place down in Sanford or something. I contacted them and they gave me a better, more local job. Pay is based on where you're at in college (number of credit hours I think). More credit hours = more money.

If you're lucky you may get a job with a group that lets you work during the semester. You can get a job that pays $15/hr and just has you on-hand to do some minor design work on bridges and lets you spend 50-75% of your time doing your homework. It's not a bad deal at all, really. That was my friend that lucked out into that job, though. I only got internships that were for the summer, and my second one made me ridiculously sick (worked in a nasty moldy building).

Still, the experience was great, and if you aren't a pile of medical fail like me you'll get a lot out of it if you see the value of your experience.

I banged out a great internship with the DOT as Mindstorm said.

well i'm getting a lot of positive feedback about my resume, but its usually followed by an apology that they are not hiring at this time and that i should follow up in a month.

Welcome to the world of job hunting, get used to it. Although you may want to take them up on their advice and follow up in a month. Unfortunately, you may very well get the same answer then as you are now. Don't take it too personally but dont be afraid to take a long hard look at your approach and tweak anything that may not be in top form.

oh i will definitely be following up. i have alumni contacts at a couple companies i am really interested in and they have been giving my some really good guidance. one has been discussing bringing on an intern with his boss and wants to talk to me next week, but he's not even sure if there will be a position.

The beauty of an intern is that you cost little to nothing to have on board. If youre willing to work for free and can sell yourself and what benefit you will bring to the company, its not out of the realm of possibility to create a position for yourself.

Too bad youre not anywhere near my line of work because coincidentally, my boss told me yesterday that I have funding for a summer intern. (and i didnt even ask for one)

today on epack i saw for the first time ever an unpaid engineering internship. ^^^engineering interns are usually paid, and often paid fairly well

i don't know how to offer to work for free, and most big firms wouldn't allow it because of labor law violations
