What's the general consensus on supplemental insurance? AFLAC was in the office today, they are offering supplemental accident, hospital, cancer, and life insurance plans. Each plan has a couple of different riders. I'm thinking about picking up the accidental and hospital. We have a decent short term disability as part of our regular benefits, but my health coverage has a $3000 deductible. From what I understand, the AFLAC money could be applied to the insurance deductible. I've been out of work previously due to serous injury and the extra money would have come in handy. Also, if I leave the company, I can carry the AFLAC with me at the same rates.
Anyone have any insight into this? Is it worth it?

seems like there was already a thread on this
anyway, i had aflac but i never used it in two years so i let it lapse. it was pretty cheap though, so i don't necessarily think it's a bad thing 3/23/2010 11:07:53 PM |

My wife has Aflac accident and short term disability through her work that she bought in October. In december, she broke her ankle in three places, and required surgery to get it fixed. Aflac not only paid out more than we expected for the actual break / initial setting, but they paid out on the surgery, all of the follow up and all the time she was out of work. The only thing they haven't paid anything on (and I can't say I'm annoyed as we've gotten more than our money's worth) is the second surgery / hospital stay she needed after the wound got infected following the first surgery (exactly 32 days from the accident, policy says incidents other than PT / follow up must occur within 30 days of the accident). The short term however paid out for all of the time she was out of work, from the day she broke her ankle to after the second surgery. And they paid pretty much as soon as the doctor wrote in the order, not after she got back to work. They were by far the easiest company to deal with through the whole ordeal, and if you're getting it cheap (I think we pay $30 / month for both short term and accident combined) it's more than worth it. 3/24/2010 7:17:22 AM |

had Aflac cancer policy bc of my family's history. I let it lapse when I lost my job, but I'll prolly pick it up again when I find a new one.
My parents had it, and both rounds of cancer my dad had (asophageale in 99 and prostate in 08) they picked up where his primary left off. This was huge in 99 as he had radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. As an "outsider" I can't tell you a number bc that just wasn't something my parents shared w/ me at the time, but I know it helped out a lot. They were very pleased when I picked up the coverage.
I would have also added on the ^ bc I believe it also included maternity. That may have been a different policy. 3/24/2010 9:24:48 AM |

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I'd originally just went to the meeting for the free donuts, but I'm kind of glad I went now. 3/24/2010 7:19:07 PM |

aflac is probably one of the best things you can get.
I hate insurance in general, but the ROI for aflac is well worth it. 3/24/2010 7:59:50 PM |
