i enjoyed organic I and II
i took them one summer when the professor from peace was teaching it...i forget her name, but she has a wonky eye and is married to some distinguished prof in the chem department here
she was very nice, very helpful, and the way she taught really helped me 4/2/2010 2:37:35 PM |

Used to be if you hated organic then all you had to do was cruise through Dr. Baumgardner's 221/223 and laugh at all the people that hated Wall and Sandberg 4/19/2010 5:30:58 PM |

If you hate Sandberg in organic chemistry, you should quit whatever major is requiring that you take it. She's one of the better teachers you will ever have for any science subject, let alone a difficult class like O-chem. 4/21/2010 2:11:31 PM |

Sandbergs class is not hard to pass. Also, she is a better professor even if she's a pain in the ass.
Novak is hard. Novak is also astoundingly awesome 4/21/2010 11:18:43 PM |

icyhotpatch.. if you go to office hours for 1 hr after every class and do his worksheets.. I assure you that you will make an A in both classes. 4/22/2010 12:29:09 AM |
Jen All American 10527 Posts user info edit post |
suggestions. Pray and practice. My biggest criticism of Novack is that he gives out soooooo much practice material that it makes practicing it all seemingly impossible.
The first day of class he announced that this class was rated R and not because of him but because when you got your first test you would say "Fuck, we didn't learn any of this". He made good on his word. His test are complicated synthetic reactions because his syntheis usually involve some 5 or so reactions. I made it through his I couse but his II course IMO is much more difficult. Sandberg for example gets easier.
Also, i assure you going to his office hours for an hour a week will not get you an A

An hour after every class. And it is humanly possible to do all of his practice stuff and still have a life. He also posts practice exams with keys so you can get a feel for what reactions you need to be able to utilize yourself.
The pros of office hours are the following:
1. You develop a friendly relationship with him.. and trust me.. HE IS AWESOME. After the end of Sum II last summer we were all about to go to a pub together. And he is a KILLER recommendation.
2. He challenges you with problems he makes up on the spot, usually problems relating to what was taught that day in class or the class before. This helps with two things: First, it shows you his mindset with how he creates problems for the exam. Second, it forces you to THINK so that when you have a problem on an exam it is easier for you to think analytically about it.
Don't let these people scare you... they apparently didn't do any of the above.
**Also, for every homework worksheet he assigns.. there is a POINT to it. Each one focuses on a certain skill you must acquire to master the material. If you skip out on one then you just missed a chunk of the material, which is probably why some ppl who take him don't do so hot. The title of the worksheet usually tells you what he's aiming for you to learn from that specific activity. The homework isn't mandatory and is not counted towards your grade, which is probably why people don't do all of them. ] 4/22/2010 2:03:44 AM |

With Sandberg vs. Novak
It depends on (1) how you prefer to learn the materials and (2) how much time you have to spend to learn the material.
With Novak, you must go to his office hours and spend the time learning the material. The book doesn't really help you all that much since he teaches in his own particular style. Be prepared to spend a few hours a week at his office hours, but you'll come out with a good understanding of the concepts. He gives out TONS of worksheets, but if you have the time to do them, you will breeze through the exams.
With Sandberg, the book is much more helpful than with Novak. She also uses plenty of neumonics that make things easier. Her tests are kind of tough, but if you keep up with the material, you'll be in good shape. She's big on the concepts, so you can't really bluff your way through the material. She has tons of Webassigns for each section, but they are helpful and similar to the test.
Personally, I think that Sandberg would get you more prepared for the MCAT, PCAT, OAT, DAT, etc. since you'll rarely see complex synthesis problems on either of those exams. Conceptually, I also think that she presents the material better, but it's all about personal preference. [Edited on May 20, 2010 at 12:44 PM. Reason : BLAH!]

had wahl for orgo I and he turned about to be one of the best professor I had at state.
had sandberg for orgo II and she was... ok. her lectures are like aerobics class, she's bouncing all over the place with hand movements for stuff like tautomers (which I guess worked because I still remember it) but I just didn't absorb as much from her as from wahl.
oh yeah, A's in both course, holla 7/4/2010 2:07:26 AM |
