"Dear Carolina Law Students, Faculty and Staff,
I am writing to share the terribly sad news that the individual who was
found dead in Odom Village on Wednesday morning, April 7^th , has now
been identified as third-year law student Eric James Bryant. Current
indications point to suicide as the cause of death, although University
police are continuing their investigation. We are deeply saddened by
this news. Eric Bryant graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BA degree
in the spring of 2007. He spent his first year of law school at the
Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University. In 2008, he transferred
to Carolina Law to continue his legal studies. Our deepest sympathy and
condolences go out to Eric's family and to his many friends."

Very sad

Chit Chat was not the best place for this. He was my classmate at UNC Law, and it's pretty much shocked the whole school. We've only got 1 week of classes left, and he would have been a graduate in just a few weeks.

But you can't fail at law school! I mean, I understand people have issues, I've just never understood how they can feel it's their only option. So close to graduation, push through. Even if you've got lower grades, you've got a degree, and you're done with law school hell forever. Or quit. Either is better and less selfish than offing yourself. I just don't understand how someone SO CLOSE to being done could do this. What was so bad that he needed out? I just don't get it.

[Edited on April 8, 2010 at 5:16 PM. Reason : Literally, the lowest grade you can get is a C.]

If I had to guess, I would say he was failing or did not expect to be able to pass the bar, despite the fact that he was already many tens of thousands of dollars in debt. That would be a lot of pressure to deal with. Total speculation, though.

It could be he thought he would fail the bar and be unable to pay back his debt.

My civ pro professor told us about one of his past students who committed suicide during the semester of his class. I guess his point was "hey, if you don't get it, come talk to me... please don't kill yourself."

It probably has nothing to do with school...who knows. Maybe he had g/f or friend issues, or some sort of outside source...

Still sad, and very unfortunate.

Yeah according to her the job market for law stuff in Raleigh just blows right now. I don't know what exactly it is she does for the law office she works for now, but I do know she says it's incredibly boring and pays shit lol.

When you're suffering from depression to the point of suicide, logical conclusions about the appropriateness of your actions aren't really your top concern.
Depression's a bitch, and it runs a lot deeper than mere reactions to your day-to-day life.

Yeah I'm at UNC Law too, I didn't know the guy but it does suck. I would think he'd still qualify for in-state tuition but if not that really is a ton of debt with no jobs out there... I dunno, there's really no way to figure out why people do stuff like this I guess.

Eric completed his first year of law school at Ohio State but missed a father who was seriously ill. He transferred to Carolina from Ohio State, and moved only to have his father die within weeks.

Eric was a brilliant student and had very good grades at UNC and Ohio State. Eric was a true Tarheel basketball fan but had more pressing issues to deal with at the point in his life.

His total focus was on graduating law school but severe depression and a feeling of living a life without purpose won out. He was being treated for the problems but something went awfully wrong.

This is really a pain parents should not have to suffer. And especially read postings of persons with no facts or feelings on how petty comments can rip your heart out in a matter of seconds. Please be considerate.

I appreciate those who are being respectful to my son and his name. He was born and raised in Raleigh Nc. and had the option to attend NCSU but declined the nice invite. He was seeking higher levels of education. Which we know NCSU could not provide.
