So I found a little built up mound up next to my slab (slab foundation). Well, I decided to dig it up, first few layers were ants, decent sized black ones. Im like yay, its only ants dont worry about it.
But i dug deeper, and yep termites. Im going to check the house tomorrow for more mounds. Were the ants eating up the termites?
Anyone know any reliable pest control/termite people? 5/8/2010 10:57:47 PM |

oh shit, they're gonna have to drill into the slab as part of the mitigation... that sucks. 5/9/2010 12:22:59 AM |

I havent seen any indoors, i got a little plastic container of them im going to take to get identified..
But im pretty damned sure im right.
Again anyone know any termite companies.
Thought about trenching the house myself and then laying down the cemicals, but that seems to be a risk. 5/9/2010 2:26:20 AM |

I don't think ants and termites live in the same mounds. You sure those aren't ant larvae? 5/9/2010 2:34:56 AM |

I'd bet $100 that they are. 5/9/2010 10:17:02 AM |

yeah dude that doesn't sound right... I think they're probably just ant larvae.
Termites wouldn't be in the same mound, the ants would destroy them to protect the larvae and the queen. 5/9/2010 11:18:30 AM |

So they are termites,
Evidently the fire ants have been doing pest control for a while. But in any case they arent in the house, but in the soil. Got quotes betwen 700-1200 so now gatta figure out if i go pro or do it myself. 5/10/2010 10:38:54 PM |

Personally I'd go pro as most of them give you a guarantee of some length where they'll come back and do the work again if the termites return. 5/10/2010 11:35:03 PM |

acquire more fire ants & station them all around the house!
but yeah, i'd go professional if you can get a guarantee on the work 5/11/2010 12:29:10 AM |

Go pro, get it documented and if they have a guarantee, get someone to sign off on it. Now that you've discovered it, it can be a material fact when you go to sell the house. 5/11/2010 8:47:00 AM |

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the concern with termites under a concrete slab and why can't you dig/spray until they're gone (with some follow-up treatments around the whole house to keep the stragglers from setting up shop.)

Termites are one of those things that you don't want associated with your home when you go to sell. Any buyer who is sentient will get a termite inspection of the home, and you can bet the presence of termites anywhere on the property will be a deal breaker. 5/19/2010 1:20:59 AM |

Yea,
Does not look to be any damage, still considering doing it myself.
If i get a pro to do it i can get a contract, that might be worth something to a future buyer. 5/20/2010 8:31:20 AM |

I think anytime you're buying a house the mortgage lender requires the termite inspection.
maybe?
ETA: And I believe the guarantee you get from a Pest Control company is only like one year from application for a trench and spray. I did mine with Bulwark at my old house and was pleased. It was all day for two guys to go around my crawlspace and do the work.
