http://www.dailytech.com/If+You+Downloaded+a+Torrent+of+The+Hurt+Locker+Theres+a+Chance+You+Might+be+Sued/article18367.htm

Quote :
"The producers of "The Hurt Locker" are prepared to unleash a massive nuke on the torrent community

Those who pirate software, music, or movies often don't think about the consequences of their actions. However, if the makers of "The Hurt Locker" have their say, they may send a few pirates running for cover.

Filmmakers behind the Oscar-winning movie have launched a full-scale attack against filesharers that downloaded copies of the film. However, the most amazing part of this case is the number of pirates involved in the upcoming lawsuit and the helping hand that ISPs are giving in the investigation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, tens of thousands of pirates will be targeted in lawsuit which is expected to be filed later this week. In addition, 75 percent of the ISPs involved in the illegal downloads are cooperating with the producers to hand over the ISP addresses of the pirates. "Those that have resisted are mostly doing so, they say, because of the amount of work involved in handing over thousands of names," reports Eriq Gardner of The Hollywood Reporter.

Some torrent users have been rather defiant and dismissive of the threat to sue. Many commenters over at TorrentFreak resorted to attacking the quality of the movie once news of the impending lawsuit broke. "Not a bad scam. Make a crap movie don’t make enough money of it. Then decide to sue file shares," stated user markie. "I see a pattern emerging here. Every crap movie being made will come with file shares being sued."

Another commenter suggested attempting to cover your tracks. "EVERYONE open ur wifi up , that will be the best defense … u cant prove someone went into my public wifi and downloaded it and tried to hide there tracks," exclaimed JonnieHa1435.

Another commenter, 73, expressed fear over the crackdowns:

This type of stuff really scares me. I used to think that I would just be in danger if I was an uploader, but now as a downloader you are fair game too. I mean, I’m not a newb, but after doing a bit of research, I’m seeing that I’m apparently in no way safe as I thought I was when torrenting: I use PeerGuardian and Transmission and use the Encryption/Bad Peer Block on both, but apparently, this protects me in no way aside from ISP throttling? I’m now freaked even to open my Torrent Client.

Regardless of how things go down with this latest move by the producers of "The Hurt Locker", it appears that movie studios are pulling out all the stops to combat piracy. And from the looks of things, ISPs are for the most part throwing in their support as well."

Good thing I used a third party site, not a torrent

Speaking as one of the 10 people who actually paid to see The Hurt Locker in theaters this pisses me off. OK so you didn't make any money even though you made a good movie, BIG FUCKING DEAL. Life isn't fair, and good movies don't always get the box office numbers they deserve but you don't need to go around suing people because of it.

ah, not this shit again!

I got so tired of hearing about this stuff with napster.

Now everyone who has ever downloaded a movie illegally will have to be wondering if their IP address is gonna pop up.

Guess it's time to open up the wifi.

People that download this movie are dumb as shit and should be upset that they missed one of the top three theater experiences of last year along with Inglourious Basterds and I-don't-know-what-else.

I downloaded it because I'm in Japan and that movie is coming out here never. Good thing I live in Japan where the law says you're allowed to download music and movies

against-a-class action. every person who downloaded the movie pays 5 bucks. still come out ahead vs paying for a ticket to see it in theaters.

I bet they sue for something retarded like $5000/person. MPAA and RIAA are all jerks.

Wouldn't it be simpler to come up with a system that works? Raise Netflix to $20/month and put every movie you have on streaming HD. Or keep the current system of adding them 30 days after DVD release and charge a $1 premium to watch it within the period. There are a slew of ways to make money off of this, they're just too busy suing people to innovate.

All it's gonna take is for them to sue one person who can prove they didn't download it and this thing is gonna get thrown out of court..

^ that’s an interesting thought

it wouldn’t be too hard to flood bit torrent trackers with fake IP addresses without affecting the swarm download speed. So if they are just harvesting IPs, they wouldn’t know which were real or fake, or at least it’d take a lot more work to prove, enough so that they won’t bother.

not quite. They can scrape the tracker to get all IPs in the swarm along with what pieces everyone has, stats for what people have uploaded/downloaded, and other pretty damning info. Torrents are pretty awful for annonymity because the protocol requires everyone to bascially know where everyone else for a file is and what they're doing. The only protection you could have from the MPAA/RIAA is A) strength in numbers (they can only prosecute so many at a time B) resistance from your ISP to give up data (lol) C) private trackers (altho this isn't really protection, it just makes it less likely you'll get caught).

The rule of thumb for all P2P is that if you can get to it, so can the RIAA/MPAA. Statistically you probably wont be caught. So do it at your own risk, but know that there really isnt any protection and anyone who claims there is is wrong.

Oh well. I too downloaded this, we'll just have to wait and see.

Ernie,

Read my reply on page 1. According to Fair Use its not illegal to own a copy of something you already own as long as its of equal or lesser quality and you're not using it for anything other than backup purposes.

I'm sure they'll make it super easy by dropping the lawsuit and forgetting that you exist when you tell them to fuck off because you own a licensed copy.

lol, j/k.

I just wanna know what kind of retard logic says that downloading an illegal copy isn't somehow circumventing the DVD copy protection. Just because you get somebody else to do your dirty work, that doesn't make it legal.

"But Officer, I didn't steal this car myself, I got some hood rat to steal it for me. Don't worry though, I have a legally purchased car at home that's just like this. I just didn't want to scratch up my original copy"

All I've gotten is a gateway from time Warner that says a copyright holder has made a complaint that you've infringed and you can't use the web till you click that you are aware o the complaint. It says to wait for further email.
