A spray bottle with water has worked for me in the past. Luckily, my current cat is not much of meower unless she's saying hello to me or it's feeding time. 5/14/2010 5:33:27 AM |

My cat meows all the time but he's male and I knew he'd be more vocal so I was expecting it. He usually just wants attention, wants to be picked up and carried, or wants to be petted. I pretty much now know what he wants by the sound of the chirp he makes. Yes he has me trained. You can't stop a cat meowing, it's nothing like a dog barking, a cat meows when it's just talking. If it's past the kitten age then it will probably be like this for the rest of it's life.
GTG, I just got meowed at to make a lapportunity asap. 5/14/2010 7:12:01 AM |

i dont give him shit just to give it too him. if ive seen hes been good ill give him treats, bojangles straw, or more catnip in his scratching post. also when i see hes been good he gets to go out and eat some grass but comes back in after about 3 minutes. He doesnt want to to stay out side i know for a fact. i do have to take him in for his yearly coming up soon though5/14/2010 8:24:51 AM |

My cat is vocal as shit but she sure as hell knows not to make noise when I'm in bed. That was indoctrinated into her when she was a wee kitty. If she started meowing, she got thrown out the bedroom and the door was shut in her face. Now she only meows if she gets shut out, otherwise she doesn't make a peep. 5/14/2010 8:33:37 AM |

How old is your cat? If it is a kitten it's just gonna meow incessantly and there isn't much you can do. If it is 2+ yrs then it is just being a pain. I recommend ear plugs. My cat used to start meowing outside my bedroom door at around 3am and wouldn't shut up until I got up. This was especially a pain in the ass on weekends when I like to sleep in. So I just got a pair of ear plugs (They have a box of like 12 of them at Wal-Mart for something like $1.50) and anytime she started meowing while I was sleeping I just put the ear plugs in and went back to sleep. She continued to meow for months but it never bothered me again... now she's gotten older and usually stays quiet. I also just got a dog too... the cat doesn't like meowing cause it lets the dog know where she is. 5/14/2010 8:45:28 AM |

Completely incorrect.
My girlfriends cat, and the second one I bought for her, used to meow nonstop in the morning outside her door when they wanted their meals. She would just get up and give them their food.
They tried that shit when we moved in together. Lasted about a week. They noticed a difference between her coming to the door and being nice and me slinging the door open and throwing shit at them.
They now sit outside the door quiet until we wake up and come out to them 9 out of 10 times. Once in a while i hear a slight whimper. And its not like every time I come out the door they run in fear. If they are sitting there quiet they just wait till I come out and start meowing.
Her original cat also used to jump on the couch and paw and meow at her when she had food. He now sits his ass on the floor, quiet, and watches us eat. Sometimes we give him a bit, sometimes not.
You can get cats to behave the way you want.
They just have to believe you WILL smack them.

i use force when im repremanding(sp) the fucker. He is almost 4 and knows when im angry its time to get in his house and shut up. but for about the last week its been all like well fuck you ill stop untill you are not paying attention anymore. then he goes right back to it. i squirt him, snap at him(he usually stops at that) and slap at him. I never scream cause that doesnt do shit 5/14/2010 11:05:49 AM |

Yeah, water or air duster to the face. I also find it useful to grab it by the neck, hold its gaze right your face, and hiss loudly with bared teeth while giving it a gentle shake. Scares the shit out of cats. Of course it only works if you do it instantly after the infraction, every single time without fail. And it has to genuinely terrify the cat and establish your dominance. Otherwise the cat is training you. 5/14/2010 11:11:54 AM |

Haha mine would never fall for that shit. As soon as it goes in cage, no matter how large, the howling starts. That's alright, I can move the cage outdoors. It'll howl for hours until it nods off, no joke. 5/14/2010 11:51:01 AM |

The problem is your cat has taught you to open the door for him. Never ever let an animal tell you what to do...unless they're showing you the vomit or mudbutt face, then they can go out quick.
Now that he's gotten you to open the door for him, he's going to keep doing it. You simply have to teach him that meowing at the door doesn't cause you to open the door. I say simple, but it'll probably take weeks... Chase down the cat with a squirt bottle every time he meows or get yourself a border collie, australian shepherd, corgi, or whatever working dog and teach the dog to chase down the cat every time it meows.5/14/2010 5:06:23 PM |

Giving shit just to give to him may not be a problem -- it's when you give him shit, or do something he wants after he meows. Once he associates meowing with getting what he wants, you're fucked.
^ That's what I was getting at -- you can't reward the meowing. In fact, now it will take perhaps a month of ignoring the meowing before it stops.5/14/2010 5:28:58 PM |

Eh, they're pretty silent pets as long as they're fed and you let them run around. And for crying out loud it even shits where you tell it to. That's pretty impressive in my book. If you get a noisy lemon just put it down and get another one, it's not like we're running out of them. 5/15/2010 9:27:58 AM |

our cat just turned 1 and she hardly ever meows. the only time she will meow is when she sees me getting her food or i start playing with one of her toys...
and then it isn't even a "meow". she just "squeaks" a couple times. I don't think she even knows how to "meow" properly. 5/15/2010 1:55:06 PM |

The same false generalization could be said of kids -- what matters is how they are raised and taught. My cat, and many of my friends' cats, don't do any of the stereotypical shit, like excessive meowing, scratching furniture/carpets, misc property destruction, peeing somewhere they're not supposed to, etc. Not all cats are menaces -- I'd wager that a similar ratio of dogs, or as I said, children, are menaces. Again, it's how they're socialized, how you deal with them....5/15/2010 2:07:17 PM |

Some breeds are more needy than others. The american shorthair likes to hang around at a distance most of the time but won't go crazy if you're not around and it's free to roam. 5/15/2010 2:22:58 PM |
