I don't see how the EU doesn't break apart in the next 18-24 months. Brexit was a start, Nice attack, unrest and a slide into Islamism in Turkey, and then all the myriad issues with migrants is going to push Europe into closing the free movement zone and probably split up the EU.

I think people are starting to realize that we are living in a true shift in historical direction right now. There is a profound anti-globalist sentiment taking shape all over the globe.

I'm torn. It's been wildly ineffective in a lot of ways. The trade zone is an excellent idea, but the rest of it is so piecemeal that it could be a net negative. Seems like a lot of half measures.

The fact that many countries don't use the euro makes it hugely advantageous for a country like Germany (which would otherwise have a much stronger currency) while hurting say, Greece (which should have a weaker currency). It's a bit of a bureaucratic nightmare that hasn't really paid off for a lot of the member countries.

I think it's a good idea in theory, a United Europe would be good I think, but it's instituted so many half measures and is so heavily controlled by one or two countries that it just doesn't work.

So I had made this thread while I was on my way from Camp Darby, Italy (my base) to deployment in Manas, and this is what my travel looked like.

Day 1: Travel from Camp Darby Italy, Italy to Aviano Air Base, Italy

Day 2: Outprocess and collect things from Aviano

Day 3: Take a commercial flight from Venice to Frankfurt and then a bus to Ramstein, Germany. Check into hotel.

Day 4-10: Every day we had to check out of the hotel, carry all our deployment gear to the PAX terminal, and wait around all day there to see if there was a flight to take us to Manas (they couldn't tell us until the plane was about to leave). After the last flight left, we would have to try to check back into the hotel, but they never had enough rooms, so we were always like 3-7 in a room.

Day 11: A flight with enough room for 5 of us (out of 7) to go comes. I send 5 of them to the plane and head back to the hotel. That plane ends up breaking down, those 5 spend hours on the tarmac before heading back to the hotel.

Day 12: They fix that plane, there is room for me and the other guy now too. We all take the flight to Aviano AB (where we originally started on Day 2-3) and then to Manas.

For all this time, we were collecting massive amounts of per diem and ended up making about 1000 each for that week. Our leadership was so pissed off at us, accusing us of missing the flights on purpose.

The worst part about it, we shared the flight with a couple dozen Army guys. We stop at Aviano and the flight crew told us we had about 30-40 to run to the BX to get food because the load masters were going load some cargo on the plane (We were on a C-17 in jump seats). Army dude rushes into the BX, goes to Burger King and order 50 double cheeseburgers with the intent of selling them on the plane.
