I wanna spend ~$100 bucks, somebody has one they don't need. I figure either an undamaged 2nd gen or a 3g that needs a screen replacement is worth about that. jailbroken / unlocked fine but does not increase the value, I will be wiping it of all data when i get it so please don't think a massive amout of apps makes it worth more, either.
thanks, Ben

I've got a 2nd gen I'm looking to get rid of soon. It's jailbroken, running 3.0.1, though I haven't kept up whether newer basebands actually prevent you from unlocking/jailbreaking, if that's your plan. I'll PM you when I get a chance 5/21/2010 12:50:29 PM |

no i dun think so the first model had 2 generations then there was the 3g 5/22/2010 11:47:00 AM |

uh, no.
the first gen had a 4GB, an 8GB, and then they decided to release a 16GB at the end of the product cycle. That's not a new generation, it's just a product update.
[Edited on May 22, 2010 at 1:47 PM. Reason : it's called the 2G because it operated solely on the 2G (edge) network] 5/22/2010 1:47:00 PM |

so i am confused then - if someone is offering a 2nd gen then it automatically has 16gb? 5/22/2010 2:28:06 PM |

no
the first gen iphone was the non-3G model (aka 2.5G, or EDGE) that was available in 4, 8, and 16GB models the second gen iphone was the 3G and you could get 8 or 16GB models third gen is the 3GS and they added a 32GB model
people usually refer to the first gen iphone as simply "iphone" second gen is "iphone 3G" third gen is "iphone 3GS" 5/23/2010 5:13:50 AM |

he's buying it secondhand, not thru AT&T. no iphone plan required.5/24/2010 12:20:22 PM |

yea, but don't you have to pay for the plan if you want to use it on AT&T? 5/24/2010 12:33:48 PM |

^ correct. I have been doing this for 2 years with my first gen 8gb. 5/24/2010 12:33:56 PM |

You can get the generic data plan and use the phone with that. AT&T doesn't have to know what phone you're carrying so there is no reason to get the iphone plan. 5/24/2010 12:52:25 PM |

at&t, unless the phone is UNLOCKED, can tell if you have a smartphone attached to their network. unlocking the phone does let me use it without a data plan, but i lose visual voicemail and some other features. i just want the iphone for it's wifi basically. 5/24/2010 1:07:01 PM |

Even if it isn't unlocked, they don't require you to have a data plan for a smartphone, unless I am somehow unique. The default as stated on my bill shows up as "InternetPayPerUse-Group $0.01/KB "
my phone is not unlocked, and I do not pay for a data plan at all. All I have other than the minimum voice plan is 200 SMS per month for 5 bucks. on the website, it definitely shows up as an iphone. 5/24/2010 1:59:11 PM |

so what is the cheapest plan you can get to use with the iphone? 5/24/2010 2:08:41 PM |

^^i was at att the other day and they said that as of febuary they can know what you are using, and what happens is this (my buddy had this happen): he has two iphones, one unlocked, one locked. so he puts the sim from the unlocked phone into the locked one, and att sends him a text asking him politely to contact customer support to setup his data plan as required by the contract (yea, it's in there) when using a smartphone/pda device - he put his sim back in the unlocked one and just told them he borrowed a friend's phone to get a number, battery died, whatever and that was that...att reps said that if the initial text is ignored they will just start charging you...anyone with an iphone before feb was 'grandfathered' in or something. i am only repeating what i have been told, any part of this could be inaccurate. 5/24/2010 2:15:23 PM |

gotcha, if that's true, then i got grandfathered in.

If that's the case, they're the only carrier that doesn't charge extra for smart phone data. Sprint even charges you smart phone data prices on "dumb" phones on your family plan. It's like making money out of thin air.5/25/2010 12:33:12 AM |

still looking a good iphone.
edit: since the 3gs is $97 at walmart now I will not be paying out a crap-ton of money for older used models, that said i would still prefer to get a used one at a good price, as i am trying to sidestep paying at&t data plan $$$'s.]] 5/25/2010 12:48:48 PM |

^^^ oh they definitely charge you for data, in my case if i use any data services via EDGE, it's 1c/KB. I just disabled data roaming on my phone so that data transfers work only if I'm connected via Wifi.
but apparently as of february, you can't do what I'm doing anymore, which kinda sucks. But in my case I plan on buying the new 4G and work is going to pay for everything so it's not a big deal to me anymore. 5/25/2010 1:18:25 PM |
