oh i agree about bottled water in first world countries being a scam!
though i did drink the tap water in both vietnam and china. whoops. i didn't get sick though. i was staying in a pretty western hotel and they claimed it was safe to drink. none of the paranoid people drank it (and some of them ended up sick lol) but i drank it and got ice in my drinks.
when we were out in the jungle though at dumpy little restaurants i did not drink the water, though. but i did eat the fresh fruit and shit so whatever. 5/25/2010 8:23:36 AM |

yea i know - i just stopped caring after awhile. i also at street food. i wanted to experience shit and i didn't end up sick so...whoops. i just tried to exercise common sense when choosing street vendors to eat at. 5/25/2010 8:27:24 AM |

i did the same.
what's the point of going otherwise?
the only thing i didnt do was drink the water from the faucets in the hotel i was at in shenzhen...
mostly because they provided like 5 liters of pellegrino per day in the hotel, so why bother 5/25/2010 8:29:52 AM |

I'll tell you what...bottled water is a hell of a lot tastier than the water here at the beach is. I've never liked how it tastes.5/25/2010 9:23:19 AM |

don't the chemicals in the plastic bottles leak into the water or something? 5/25/2010 9:29:02 AM |

depends on the plastic...BPA (the most recent buzz) is limited to polycarbonate (lexan) and WAS most commonly found in the hard, colored, nalgene bottles...BPA mimics estrogen by binding to estrogen receptors in the body
BPA is found in lots of things and most human exposure is related to the plastic lining of canned goods, not nalgene bottles...it actually breaks down pretty readily within the body, but constant exposure means constant effects and, over the long run, is suggested to promote cancerous cells
the thing about BPA in plastic bottles, though, is that it is minute compared to other sources and is most readily leached when heated or exposed to acidic liquids...if you only use your BPA bottle for water (no juices or hot liquids), exposure is minimal...of course, the big uproar started because baby bottles (in which you heat milk) were made of PC and as such, were exposing babies (the most sensitive group) to elevated levels of BPA
as a general rule, PETE (or PET), LDPE, HDPE, and PP are the "safe" plastics in that we haven't found anything explicitly dangerous in their general usage...they handle acidic liquids, hot liquids, and harsh chemicals fairly well without leaching5/25/2010 9:59:49 AM |

NYC tap water does taste good
i drink tap water all the time - i used to have a brita pitcher (and i still do but i don't really use the filter part, i just like to chill my water)
and as already mentioned in non 1st world countries i'm a baller and dabble in the tap water. ohhhhh riskyyyyyyyy business. but not as risky as taking a shot of a beating snake heart apparently. after eating street food, skin on fruits and veggies and drinking the water, i was fine (i still exercised caution though about WHERE i chose to eat/drink from). dude who drank (well swallowed, anyway) the beating snake heart - not so fine. can't say i'm shocked 5/25/2010 1:54:46 PM |

The reason why pizza is so good in NYC (personal preference I know) has a lot to do with the minerals in the tap water used with the crust. 5/25/2010 1:57:25 PM |
