it's a fucking lame thing to do. it's just attention whoring. he also said in an interview recently that he considers himself to be one of the most influential artists in rock music. i mean, siamese dream is easily one of the greatest albums of the 90s, and most of his material leading up to zeitgeist was solid at the very least, but the dude hasn't put out anything worthwhile in a long time. all of his new smashing pumpkins shit fucking sucks. i'm listening to "soma" now, and the only thing more depressing than the song is knowing what billy corgan has turned into in recent years.5/27/2010 10:36:43 AM |

i don't follow him either. i've just seen it on other message boards. i stopped listening to the new material he keeps slowly releasing for the new pumpkins album, so i don't recognize lyrics that might be more recent, but he quotes his old stuff too.5/27/2010 11:07:39 AM |

best thing that ever happened to Billy Corgan was when Kurt Cobain offed himself
he got to jump into their encore spot at Lollapalooza in 94
until then he was just a big pussy faggot riding the coattails of the alternative scene
but like Jay-Z, he found a niche when Biggie and Big L died and bamboozled the ever loving fuck out of the mainstream into thinking he was king shit 5/27/2010 12:28:18 PM |

i mean, you can't say they rode coattails and then refuse to explain it. that just looks like you don't really have any evidence to back it up. the only similarity i think you could really draw from similar alternative acts are angst-ridden lyrics, but the pumpkins didn't have the same influences as the seattle bands and developed a sound that wasn't even remotely close to their contemporaries. 5/27/2010 12:37:20 PM |

I just know when I was a teenager in the 90s listening to alternative and grunge and stuff, Smashing Pumpkins was B- / C+ quality at best compared to everyone else...and I'm talking about their good stuff
I mean Cherub Rock was probably one of the few songs of theirs that I actually really liked, and it was because it rocked, not because Billy Corgan was some genius song writer
I just always thought they pretty much sucked, and Billy Corgan often sounded like a big pussy
I also thought a song like 'Today is the Greatest' (not sure of exact title) is complete trash, and they used to play that song over, and over and over and over and over

the fact that you call siamese dream B-/C+ quality stuff just proves you have no fucking idea what you're talking about.
Quote : | "I mean Cherub Rock was probably one of the few songs of theirs that I actually really liked, and it was because it rocked, not because Billy Corgan was some genius song writer" |
right. soooooo you pretty much just head banged to it and didn't really listen to what he was saying. okay.
Quote : | "I also thought a song like 'Today is the Greatest' (not sure of exact title) is complete trash, and they used to play that song over, and over and over and over and over" |
it's just "today," and it's far from trash. it's a completely hopeless, "things can't get any worse" kind of song disguised as something happy, catchy and uplifting. it's probably one of corgan's best recordings. it just seems like you got sick of it because it was overplayed. you can't fault the band for that.
just for the record, i think billy corgan is a self righteous cunt, and i would love to write him off completely, but a lot of the music he wrote and recorded is just too fucking good for me to do that.5/27/2010 12:53:32 PM |

that's fine. good thing the smashing pumpkins were known for having a really powerful and layered sound too. seriously, did you even bother listening to anything other than what you heard on the radio?
and you're shitting all over the pumpkins and calling billy corgan a pussy, yet your singing the praises of rage against the machine even though zach de la rocha was driving around LA in a fucking mercedes laughing all the way to the bank. good job.5/27/2010 1:00:56 PM |

i could care less what zach did with his money...Wu is one of my favorite rap groups of all time and I'm not a 5%er racist Muslim like half of them
i liked Rage a lot more than Smashing Pumpkins for a number of reasons
i just dont get how a band like Smashing Pumpkins gets so much acclaim nowadays, when in their own day, they were an afterthought to bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, etc] 5/27/2010 1:02:44 PM |

In the early to mid 90's they got just as much acclaim as all of those other bands.
Hell, back then, Tool was a relatively unknown band. I knew like two or three other people back then who listened to tool, and their alt.music.tool newgroup had a fraction of the traffic as the rest.
where are my fellow thirty+ year olds who where in high school during the peak of grunge?

that's fine. i'm just saying it's not a good idea to resort to name calling and then cite artists you like who could be considered just as much of a joke.
Quote : | "i just dont get how a band like Smashing Pumpkins gets so much acclaim nowadays, when in their own day, they were an afterthought to bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, etc" |
because they weren't an afterthought. they signed to a major label (virgin) before they released gish, yet they were able to release it under a subsidiary to maintain indie-cred before making the full transition for siamese dream, which, by the way, was a major commercial hit for them and was highly critically acclaimed as well. mellon collie was an even bigger success.
i don't base my praise of bands on the number of records they sell, but the smashing pumpkins were huge in their prime. not trying to be a dick here, but i seriously just don't think you ever took the time to sit down and listen to any pumpkins records from start to finish. taste in music ultimately boils down to preference, i know, but there's just no way you can listen to an album like siamese dream and say it sucks. it might not resonate with you, but that doesn't change the fact that it's an extremely well written and recorded album.
and i love pearl jam, soundgarden and alice in chains, but only material from the former 2 bands measures up to or exceeds the best of the smashing pumpkins.

siamese dream is the only album of theirs i own(ed) and listened to from start to finish...like you said its preference though...and I think some of it is generational / age-related...what you say is a very insightful and well done album based on the lyrics might not resonate with me if i'm older and have already gotten that insight from other bands previously...in that case, smashing pumpkins isn't telling me anything new, since i've already heard it from other bands...if that makes any sense
