"four corners of the earth"?

Round things don't have corners...

If that is the saying, I feel it should be eight corners, since the Earth is three dimensional, but I guess it flows better than the polar opposites of the earth. Maybe six corners? North and south pole and four equidistant points on the equator?

Maybe its in reference to the 4 nearest lagrange points.

Obviously you wouldn't count L3 for that sort of thing.
