I will purchase this.

I know many people are skeptical, and after the Phantom fiasco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom_(game_console)) I can see why people are skeptical of this type of gaming system.

However, OnLive is developed by Steve Perlman. He created XBAND, the greatest online gaming service ever. He created WebTV, which was pretty cool for that era and lasted a long time.

OnLive is gonna be awesome.

Absolutely. Even beyond normal online multiplayer action, OnLive has many social features that make it a great place to watch your friends and record and share your highlights (or lowlights)."

If this thing does take off and last, the ability to INSTANTLY / WITHOUT INSTALL play games is a huge convenience. Also for developers, they can just dev for the PC with out using the a SDK (unless they want to). I can't wait to see exactly what games I can choose my free game from. Also the ability to spectate any gamer in any game is pretty awesome.

Yeah I feel you. But if this things jumps off and doesn't fail its going to be a force to be reckoned with. Publishers make one port of a game and its can be delivered in multiple ways, the consumer doesn't need a ridiculous gaming rig and can use it for PC or TV gaming. I'd say it really a great concept. And to top it off it compatible with the 360 controller! I hope it survives but I understand the reality of the technology possibly failing.

Yeah the best thing about it is the delivery system and you dont need a hardware intensive machine to play all the latest games. I read that ATT and TWC are backers of the company so I think it has a good chance...especially if it can be integrated into cable/internet subscriptions.

the question is, how good is the visual quality and frame rate?

HDTV quality 720p and about 1ms delay of frames delivered to your PC. I know that doesn't say exactly what the frame rate is going to be but I would assume 60fps if you are to get HDTV quality graphics delivered to your screen.

I fired it up last night and the graphics of the actual gameplay are about console quality, which is good to me. The spectating and UI is much like a very high quality video. I only experienced teensy weensy amount of input and lag in general (which is expected at launch), and I did see some compression artifacts, not a whole lot but quite a few. If you want me to give you a tour I can stream it live. The UI is straight forward and works as expected, and games pretty much fire right up. All games have 30 minutes demo. If I think of anything else you might need to know I'll holla back.

Another thing is that the game selection is not that great yet, which is expected. All games have 30 minute demos. I have spectated players doing co-op in Borderlands, but I still don't know a MP game would work, you know something like a BFBC2.

The more I think about it, the more I think this thing is going to fail quickly.

1. I would think they would at least be trying to target PC the most, and if that's the case, then what about the mod community. I am sure they could find at way to distribute mods but....

2. No voice chat (but obviously it will come if it lasts long enough)

3. While the graphics are not bad, PC players, even console gamers that are use to 1080p (1080p will NOT be around for a very long time) or better might be turned off by the 720p quality.

4. Brag clips are only 10 seconds - so not a whole of bragging going on there

5. The fact hat people are just not use to it - like for example an off-brand football would never match up with Madden no matter how good it is.

6. Various other thing like internet connection issues, no physical media and memory for your saves, so you could lose your data if it not backed up on the server and your machine - they could make a way for you to save your game saves to your machine perhaps I would think.

With all of that said it has a lot of pluses and has the potential to grow and become big, but potential implies 'something to be materialized' so until they materialize from the potential there is a great chance of failing. I hope it works out!

Another interesting point is that Onlive could curb piracy. There have been several games that have had the PC version canceled due to piracy concerns, namely Alan Wake and Gears of War 3. In fact a game could be dev'ed for only one platform and be delivered to your TV or PC. Pretty brill.

^^ Paying for game is nothing new. What did you think you can play games for free? Come on now. Think of paying the monthly fee as paying for a console or computer upgrades, then you pay for the games separately. And in addition to this you can even rent games.

^Come on now. They do no charge you for anything once you give then your credit card info unless you tell them to do so. I wish that you would reconsider and at least try it out before you pass judgment on anything about the service.

What kind of internet speeds do you have and was anyone else using the something that was bandwidth intensive like a torrent on your connection? Its has gone well above my expectations, and I am not getting paid to positively talk about the service. Its been great to me, even on a netbook.

I'm not going to pay for games on an unproven platform where I cannot connect with the general public or play them at the same quality as I could on my console or pc. I would for free since I'm doing testing FOR THEM, but I'm not going to subject myself to subpar stuff AND pay for it. The data mining they get from this is worth a lot more than the licenses for the games.

Where are you located in the country? It could be the particular server that you are using. I think I am hooked to the Washington DC server. Anyway, sorry to hear, but it is a newly launched service, and its not going to be perfect for everybody. I would keep trying if I were you. Its works good for me, and I have used the service everyday since launch.

I am in! I've been playing Onlive on my acer netbook and it is quite awesome. I have even managed to get it working over Wifi. The lag is noticeable at first, but after awhile the brain adjusts. It is quite shocking to see Dirt 2 and Arkham Asylum playing on a tiny netbook. Doesn't even stress the system, as CPU usage is only around 60%.

Just a few days ago I was working on getting a few netbook friendly games on steam... Turns out I should have included Lego Harry Potter. Apparently, we are also getting a 30% discount on all game purchases this weekend...

Dumb that it didn't at least let me try or downgrade the quality of the signal or something.

They legitimately don't charge your card, and you can "demo" the games by playing the full versions for half an hour it seems.

If all you have is 1.6, it won't even let you try out the service. I pay for 3.0, I get ~2.99 on practically every speed test I try, and it still wouldn't let me even enter the lobby.

One thing to try if you already haven't is that if you are running Vista or W7 in Aero mode, switch it to Basic or Classic mode. I am not sure about this and never heard about anyone benefiting from this but it would not hurt to check it out.

I use a logitech mx revolution mouse and got a message saying onlive and logitech manager don't place nice. When I fired up fear 2 the mouse worked when choosing items in the menu, but would not control the game itself. I am going to tweak a bit more but how do they expect a large amount of pc's users who use logitech mice to take part in this?

Onlive plays quite well in my home over U-Verse with an 81ms ping. But the delay is unplayable at my friends house over Road Runner with a 35ms ping. I suspect the Onlive service saturates the Road Runner download channel, blocking the controller uplink channel.

Anyone here playing onlive over RR standard?

I played it on standard before I upgraded my internet, and it played just the same as it does on turbo for me, except for with the standard there could really be no more activity on the line or it was a good chance that it would lag out, but it was still playable.
