I would mount it first so the holes can be covered.

the dmv/shp is NOT screwing around these days with trucks that don't have tags rated for their weight/loads. it sounds like a big chunk of $$ up front, but i assure you it's far cheaper and less hassle than getting nailed for being overweight.

if you're rolling around with just a regular passenger vehicle tag on that thing, then you're REALLY asking for a ticket just as is, minus any load. surprised the dmv let it slide, but we all know how things at that place go...

[Edited on June 8, 2010 at 9:28 AM. Reason : or, sell it for an suv. pull anything you want on regular tags, i regularly gross 20k+ lol ]

Good call

gonna call the DMV today to see if I can "upgrade" my rating without completely re-registering

100% correct advice that needs to followed.
also, be sure your shit is tied down and i mean tied down not by some harbor freight straps. that motorcycle needs to be 4-cornered. it's gotten so bad now with the shp/mce that i have mounted 4 retractable ratchet straps on my trailer for my mower. i've always tied it down before and it wouldn't have gone anywhere but it wasn't "4-cornered" and fellow landscapers are getting hit hard for their zero-turns not being tied down "correctly".
oh, and btw, i had to increase the weight on my registration as well. like bbr said, they are cracking down hard on that shit.

good heads up, thanks. I called and it'll only be about 70 bucks to upgrade to 12k, but I'm thinkin I might as well go ahead and get 20. The shipping weight on the title is 5700ish (don't remember exactly, something around there), so I'm in the clear unladen but I don't have any headroom

yup, a suv is considered a passenger carrying vehicle while a pick-up or a cargo van are considered property carrying vehicles.

im legal to 17 thousand, my empty truck plus driver weighs 6,800lbs BTW... but with your early cab and 12 valve you might weigh a little less.

my average weights

truck- 6,800
truck and unladen trailer- 9,000

[Edited on June 11, 2010 at 2:17 PM. Reason : once you register over 17k it gets much more expensive]

alright i'm just looking for a happy medium, doubt i'd do any regular hauling over 17...i'll assume that my truck with driver, toolbox, and full gas tank is about 6300

so i'm lookin at 10k payload with a little headroom

sound reasonable?

only thing i'm worried about now is that my tag doesn't say "weighted" on it anymore, even if i upgrade my rating with the DOT...which makes me think i might be more prone to being pulled over if i'm pulling anything

Say you wanted to rent one of the little single car haulers from u-haul to transport a vehicle for someone moving a couple hours away. They aren't huge but are very well built, maybe even overbuilt (read- heavier than average) and on top of that they are galvanized which adds a couple hundred pounds. They weigh about the same as my trailer, 2200ish.

Your truck (6,300)
Trailer (2,200)
Gross (8,500)

If you are taxed to 10k then that only leaves you 1,500 for payload and damn near any vehicle is at least double that.

Quote :
"current rates
9,001 to 13,000 pounds inclusive 1.00
13,001 to 17,000 pounds inclusive 1.36
Over 17,000 pounds 1.54 "

My 17k tags are $235/yr

[Edited on June 11, 2010 at 5:31 PM. Reason : "shipping weight" on my truck is also 5708]

100% positive. same goes for rv's. neither is considered to be a vehicle you can carry property in for the purpose of profit. think about it, you really think all those rich politicians are going to make it so they have to pay hundreds of dollars in registration/tag fees on their escalades, navigators, x5's, luxery motor coaches, etc.?

haha, this is definitely one of the main reasons i got one. even better, the v8/v10 gas models are exempt from emissions/obdII inspection tests due to the gvw being high enough to put them in the "heavy duty" class, lol.

i've had several shp officers pull up behind/beside me thinking they've caught a gold mind with the regular tag. then, they realize it's actually an suv, not a truck with a shell and they roar off, lol. worst thing i could ever be ticketed for would be pulling over the manufacturers suggested gvw. that's a really gray area, though considering how much it can vary between manufacturers and just within different trim/option levels of the SAME model.

[Edited on June 16, 2010 at 11:52 PM. Reason : i guess this is just my small satisfaction being able to say fuck the man/taxes and get away with it]

That's very good info. Maybe a few years down the road when me and the missus have kids I'll have to get one (I'm pretty sure I'll have big of enough boat to justify one by then too).

that SUV loophole is awesome. If only I liked them.

anyway upped the gross to 9k today as a temporary stop to cover my ass if I, you know, decide to throw a dresser in the back or something.
