So, we're going to single out Apple this time? If you want to end sweatshop horrors in Asia, you're basically going to have to stop shopping at most stores. If you aren't willing to do that, then you don't get to criticize Apple, since your actions enable them to continue. 6/3/2010 5:24:43 PM |

Just saying...Apple hasn't changed neither have nerds opinions of Apple. If you will, its still the 'we' darling among the masses. It's been reported and discussed in other threads, there wasn't a need to create another one.
Foxconn is their employer, not Apple. Foxconn makes products for other companies, too. And from the last article you linked, Apple is apparently directly subsidizing the cost of raises for the factory employees. The only way that Apple will have control over the situation as you and others would want is for them to take ownership of Foxconn. 6/3/2010 7:29:11 PM |

Apple could pull out of Foxconn at any time yet they remain there for the large profits that they wouldn't see in more suitable work environments. 6/3/2010 7:31:17 PM |

And in-house expertise that will take a while to build up with another manufacturer. Apple has more incentive to stick with their current pipeline, lest they cause disruptions and changes in quality to their delivered product. 6/3/2010 7:32:37 PM |

You're right dude, I mean look at all the clothing companies, car manufactures, etc, etc...they are all Made in USA! USA #1. None of this Designed in California, Made in China bullshit.

At least Apple is doing something about the work conditions. Why aren't all of Foxconn's clients doing the same? OR any Chinese manufacturers clients doing the same? I imagine all factory workers in china have it rough.
I guess when they're not making Apple products, nobody cares about them. Just like when _______ (insert color of choice) people die everyday nobody gives a shit unless an American/white is among them, then we care. /troll

let us not forget this:
http://news.cnet.com/apple-sued-over-exploding-ipod-touch/
Quote : | "Apple has been sued by the mother of a 15-year-old boy who said his 16GB iPod Touch exploded in his pants pocket, burning his leg.
Ars Technica spotted the case, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Apparently one day in class the boy "heard a loud pop and immediately felt a burning sensation in his leg," according to a copy of the complaint. (Click here for a PDF copy.)
According to the complaint, the boy "realized his Apple iTouch (sic) had exploded and caught on fire in his pocket. ....Plaintiff A. V. immediately ran to the bathroom and took off his burning pants with the assistance of a friend. The Apple iTouch had burned through Plaintiff A. V.'s pants pocket and melted through his Nylon/Spandex underwear, burning his leg."
The plaintiff suffered second-degree burns as a result of the explosion, according to the complaint, and is seeking in excess of $225,000 in compensatory and punitive damages. An Apple representative said the company does not comment on pending litigation.
Mobile device explosions causing injuries are unfortunately an old story, but in many cases those explosions can be traced to faulty mobile phone batteries that are often cheap knock-offs added by the user. The battery on the iPod Touch, however, is not replaceable by the user.
There are an awful lot of facts that must come to the surface before we know exactly what happened with this particular iPod Touch, but the case bears watching." |
