To me debt-free with at least a years worth of expenses in the bank, a comfortable retirement account, and a regular job.

Without debt payments you could make like $30K and live comfortably.

^^really? because if you live in california your shack could be worth 300k now making you "rich" in net worth but if you actually got a mortgage on it you would be "poor" income wise.

depends on what the loan is for.
by assistance, I mean, you need it to pay bills...buy food...get by.
if your loan is for school or business or something, that's not "assistance" as I mean it.

Rich: Financially stable
Poor: not

I'm personally not financially stable, but thats what parents are for until you're about 25.

WHAT? then my parents should be paying me back for the last four years of my life.

though i can't complain TOO much cause i did get to go back on my parent's health insurance after i went back to school. but i age out in a month so i'm getting kicked to the curb again. and i lived at home for 2 summers whilst in law school. though the second one wasn't by choice. but that did save some $$$ on food. unfortunately i was still paying board at a place i wasn't living in

i want a job so badddddddddddd

i'm speaking in general, it is fairly difficult for people to get jobs now and most people your age are going back to school because they can get loans and live off that + parents, and that's better than collecting unemployment i guess...

Unless i make a shit load of money before i graduate i probably won't be stable by the time i'm 25. Then again i don't really spend money on anything.

So paying $1300 month for a mortgage, reducing your salary to $84,400 per year, would make you poor?

rich: the ability to spend money on things you want without having to think about it.
poor: not having money to spend on things you need.

middle ground: money for things you need but maybe not all the things you want

rich: when they can afford to pretty much do what they want, go on vacation somewhere? sure! pickup a new tv? sure! buy a new house somewhere? sure! when money is not a issue when it comes to actually living.

poor: when you can't or just barely cover costs, eg. if your car broke down could you pay to replace it? no. repair it? no. if you had a medical bill come up could you cover it with out impacting a large portion of your other expenses? no. when money is a pivotal issue when it comes to actually living.

I know, right?
I still think my answer is good:

rich: savings account / investments

[middle]: neither

poor: accepting financial assistance (to get by) / welfare

But when you're rich, you want things like luxury yachts that you can't afford, or perhaps a private jet...

And by this definition, the vast majority of Americans are poor...

Poor- limited to no water, food, ,shelter, healthcare, rights, education, family/friends/love.

I consider myself VERY rich by that definition.

I don't care what anybody says, living in the USA makes you rich.

not everyone wants a yacht or a private jet. even if they could 'afford' it....

my definition still fits, as if you're truly 'rich' you could afford to get a 'yacht' (note there is not quantitative size or cost here 100k will get you a nice boat, much less than a house, it's the upkeep that will kill you) or get in on a private jet share quite easily.

my definition is also transferable across the board to any country.
