I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you. From her blog:
Quote : | "Abby has all of the equipment on board to survive a crisis situation like this. She has a dry suit, survival suit, life raft, and ditch bag with emergency supplies. If she can keep warm and hang on, help will be there as soon as possible. Wild Eyes is designed for travel in the Southern Ocean and is equipped with 5 air-tight bulkheads to keep her buoyant in the event of major hull damage. It is built to Category 0 standards and is designed to self-right in the event of capsize." |

That sucks
Quote : | "A 16-year-old Southern California girl attempting a solo sail around the world was feared in trouble Thursday in the frigid, heaving southern Indian Ocean after her emergency beacons began signaling and communication was lost." |
Quote : | "Abby last communicated with her family at 4 a.m. PDT and reported 30-foot swells but was not in distress, Pinkston said.
An hour later the family was notified that her emergency beacons had been activated, and there was no further communication. Pinkston said the beacons were manually activated.
Her brother, Zac, who sailed around the world at age 17, told Los Angeles radio station KNX that Abby was in a heavy storm at the time she called home.
"We're still trying to figure out the rescue situation," he said. "There's two boats headed out to her position, one is an estimated 40 hours, the other is 48. Right now we're trying to figure out if there is any way faster. She's in the middle of nowhere pretty much in the southern Indian Ocean. There's nothing closer."" |

brb, registering the movie rights to this:
Girl goes on a sail around the world, gets kidnapped by pirates who want to sell her in the human trafficking business, her father (Jason Statham? Liam Neeson? Mark Whalberg? Bruce Campbell?) buys a boat and starts scouring the oceans looking for the pirate scum who stole his little girl. Kills everyone, saves the day... May or may not die as a result. 6/10/2010 5:02:05 PM |

I wonder how reliable this bit of info is
Some of the EPIRBs automatically are activated when they're tilted at a certain angle...in other words you install them completely vertical, and if the boat turns upside down, they will automatically activate6/10/2010 6:08:47 PM |

^ this was also in the article
Quote : | "He said Abby's boat was most likely not completely submerged because another beacon would be triggered at a depth of 15 feet." |
I have no idea but I would guess that info is accurate. Her brother must know his shit.
There's an update: They sent a plane after her, supposed to be there in 4 hours.
Quote : | "an aircraft is expected to leave soon from Perth, Australia.
It will take about four hours for the plane to reach the remote location between Africa and Australia." |

what can an airplane do anyway? use binoculars and see if shes on the boat? drop supplies? i dont understand how that helps besides confirming if shes alive or not... which a ship can do too, just a little slower. 6/10/2010 7:00:48 PM |

Im not much of a sailor, hate jellyfish, salt, and boredom.
But in real sports this is called "parents forcing a kid to play a sport" when the kid burns out and just gives up.
I really doubt it's in anyone's DNA to want to do something that's already been done before just so they can attend better cocktail parties later in life.
I think people mistake "risky adrenaline fueled adventures" for legitimate accomplishments.
Just do drugs instead, you'll get a better high at a cheaper price without as much risk... 6/10/2010 7:22:31 PM |

Ummm...you don't really understand the logistics of something like this. She's about 2 days away by a ship. Even if a ship is dispatched, they're going to send an aircraft out to locate. If they can't find anything by air, there's no sense in shipping out for 2 days to the middle of the ocean.6/10/2010 7:42:47 PM |
