I just got caught up on Dexter after watching the first 4 seasons in about 3 weeks. I generally prefer this way to watch TV series, because I tend to align myself with 1 season wonders, and I like to join the conversation late in the series' life. I am considering breaking bad, mad men, weeds, californication, but want to get a broader opinion on whats the best show. 6/13/2010 10:02:07 PM |

Chuck has 3 seasons and is probably the most addicting show on TV right now IMO. Season 4 this fall.
Burn Notice is on season 4 and it's pretty good. Psych season 5 starts in July.
House just finished season 6 like a month ago, will get a season 7. 6/13/2010 10:05:55 PM |

I got hooked on dexter by instant watch too. Most of the shows you are thinking about are really great. The new season of mad men is starting in late July, so if you start now you should be caught up by then. Believe me it is so worth it. Mad men is one of the best shows ever written.
I am thinking about starting Breaking Bad but I heard it like watching Mr. Rogers turn into Nino Brown. 6/13/2010 10:07:09 PM |

I've gotten into Rescue Me lately...wouldn't consider it a great show but definitely a good one. Damages is another solid pick. 6/13/2010 11:00:25 PM |

It's Burn Notice. Chuck is a good option as well.
I watched a season and a half of Mad Men and then just stopped. It turned from a show about womanizing ad execs to something they just tried to forcefully inject additional drama in to.
That said, I can only think of two shows that I've watched and then just stopped -- Mad Men and Damages. The first season of Damages wasn't terrible (though it got awful slow at times), but by about 3 episodes into the second season, I'd just had enough.
Psych is good, but it's not really a show you have to binge through. There are never really any overarching plots, it's just very episodic, so it's a great "I have to kill 40 minutes" show.

psych is one of my favorite shows, but you're right you can definitely miss some shows here and there, I would recommend it for DVR fodder though for anyone. 6/14/2010 8:31:04 PM |

chuck is the best show on tv, atm. dexter owns, californication owns, entourage owns. I like fringe and even though some eps are kinda meh, the overall arc owns. Dr who owns. Castle is pretty good. Sons of Anarchy's 3rd season starts in the fall i think, it owns. Justified is pretty good, but it just ended its first season (and will return for #2). True blood is good. 6/14/2010 10:28:23 PM |

Breaking Bad, Chuck, House, Entourage, Californication, True Blood, Weeds are all great shows. Of those, I would say Breaking Bad is hands down the most consistently brilliant one, but the others hold their own. Californication is pretty great all around.

Breaking Bad and Dexter are the best dramas on TV right now.
Rescue Me is the most underrated (and most undeservedly least-talked-about show) on TV for the last 5 years.
Community and Modern Family are the best new comedies this year and are must-sees. You can fly through the first seasons of both of them. The League started great and kind of fizzled towards the end of it's first season. 6/15/2010 10:30:10 PM |

My wife says she's been wanting to see Mad Men, so I'll be watching that at a slower pace (she doesnt get into shows like I do)
For myself I'm starting Chuck (its already on the PS3) then I'm turning to breaking bad.
I saw someone mentioned some already completed series'. that is definitely down my alley as well. Any other decent sci-fi shows on now/recently other than fringe? 6/15/2010 11:30:15 PM |

A: With it's 451 episodes and several specials over a 1/2 an hour long, it would take approx. 250 hours, or 10.5 days to watch all of The Simpsons!

It's really the most watched show on cable (key word cable. ratings that get praise for cable stations sometimes get canceled on network)
Burn Notice is the #1 show on cable and Royal Pains was last summers #1 for new shows (take that with 50 grains of salt), USA is using that in their commercials.
Psych is a former cable #1, and I think Monk was before Psych.6/16/2010 4:16:17 AM |

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was pretty good for network TV science fiction, though it only lasted two seasons.
Oh and I just realized there was a third show I just completely stopped watching and never thought to return to: Dollhouse.6/16/2010 9:50:25 AM |

Burn Notice is still really good, but last season and so far this season haven't been as good as the early seasons.
Royal Pains is showing promise, but like Modern Family and Community it's only 1 season in and I can't really include that on the "best long-running series on TV" at this point.
Chuck is my favorite choice for this with 24 and Lost ending. Psych is a solid one though. Then you have Bones, Entourage, True Blood, The Office, Leverage, and Big Bang Theory. I'd also include Eureka if you're into Sci-Fi, use to watch Fringe but I haven't seen the last 2 seasons.
Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles was getting better the longer it was on, was disappointed it was cut short. 6/16/2010 9:57:19 AM |
