You do realize that he shot the dog once, it died and was twitching, NOT happily wagging its tail, the cop thought it was still alive and shot it again, right?

I mean, I hate the cops as much as the next guy, possibly more, and I love animals as well, but without knowing the situation, I see a clean kill and am not prepared to pass judgement on it

uh, sure, a clean kill...

I mean, I can go walk up and shoot someone's dog in the head for no reason and it can be a clean kill. That doesn't make it right.

I can also walk up to a dog suspected to have rabies who just attacked a family, try and control it, realize I can't and shoot it in the head. Why do you immediately assume the best of the animal?

I don't like seeing animals get shot, so I'm not going to watch the video, and therefore I will not be able to form an opinion on this matter.

Yeah and that would be an incorrect way to handle the situation.

Ok, I watched the video and found an article describing the whole situation and while they were there

I'm conflicted after reading both sides...

On the one hand, I know that a scared animal (which was clearly the case seeing as the dog kept darting back and forth) is very unpredictable and they're more likely to attack the choke stick (which you can also clearly see the dog does)...

On the other hand, a man that size should be able to control the animal in question once on the choke stick and put it in the transport crate. In the article I found, it said the dog got off the stick. That just means the officer had poor handling skills of the dog. If *I* can handle 90+ lb scared and/or evil dogs on choke sticks, he should be able to as well.

But, in closing, I don't think he should've shot the dog. Around the time he shot it, it seemed to me like the dog was calming down a bit... In those cases, I think they should bring the dog in question to the shelter, put it in quarantine, then I guess the judge can decide. :\

[Edited on June 18, 2010 at 10:52 PM. Reason : ps they were called there because the dog growled at a mom and her child]

If it is a rabies suspect and isn't vaccinated, it is going to be put down regardless.

^The second shot is inconsequential. It seemed to me that the dog was already dead, so what is the problem? And you still never told me the proper way to handle the situation

death by gunshot is only an AVMA approved method if DONE CORRECTLY which was not done in that video; therefore, the chances that the dog suffered for some period of time are pretty good.

^^ rabies SUSPECT not equal rabies. there's a whole host of protocols to be followed for a suspect. that dog wasnt acting like a dog with either the dumb OR furious form of rabies. it was acting like a dog surrounded by two strange men and cars with flashing lights.

FOR THE RECORD..... someone called in the dog because it growled at her and her daughter

I didn't see anything about rabies. The owner also didn't register the dog with the city so they got in trouble for that as well.

The cops shouldn't have shot the dog. End of story.

^^^What evidence do you have that it was done incorrectly? The dog immediately collapsed and began twitching. Also, I was merely pointing out that at the time, the details weren't known and I presented a hypothetical situation in which their actions would be justified. I'm still interested to hear why in that situation they wouldn't be.

Ok, it would appear I was wrong about it being a clean kill. My bad

Edit: If the allegations are true about it growling unprovoked at a 6 year old, the dog needed to be disposed of. I've personally been involved in a situation in which a very aggressive pit bull was frequently on my family's property and was hindering our piece of mind regarding my niece and nephew's ability to play outside, and I dealt with the situation accordingly. It sucked, yes, but bottom line is people > dog

^^^ AVMA approved means a straight shot, like a captive bolt, to the front of the head. that dog was shot from the side.

**could** have killed instantly, just saying it wasnt the AVMA approved method which has been shown to cause the least suffering.

[Edited on June 18, 2010 at 11:18 PM. Reason : and based on that article...shooting it in the chest first definately caused suffering. ]

i'm cross referencing random bits of information i've learned about you from the internets to see if i can figure out whose dog you killed

if i'm successful i will send my findings to the appropriate law enforcement agency

that is absolutely retarded. Yes if the dog came on your property I could understand, but it was chained up on it's own turf. Have you ever heard of a guard dog? This is a natural instinct of dogs to be protective of their area and "flock" (be it other animals or owners and family). If you ever came and walked by my house while I was walking my dog and you came up and he growled, and then you tried to tell me he needed to be put down because of this? You better beleive we would have problems and no shelter or judge if you tried to mMs it a legal issue would ever side with you.

On q separate note: did it say if the kid was in a stroller? I know my dog doesn't like things that roll (strollers, trash cans, shopping carts, bikes, etc...) so it could have been that. People have come by with strollers and freaked out thinking he wants to attack their baby. I have to explain it is not the baby but the stroller

^ At least that officer was properly disciplined and the chief admitted wrongdoing.

Too often an internal investigation reveals that the police "acted properly" and the officer is given paid leave and then put back on the force.
