What kinds of places do people look?

What are good places around Raleigh, Durham or Chapel Hill

It really depends on what you're looking for.
That said, I've owned a ton of cars over the years and only two came from dealers. Private party deals will get you more for you money the vast majority of the time as long as you (or a trusted friend) can thin the herd for cars that are quality and priced right. If you can't you might be better off spending more at a reputable dealer to ensure you're not getting some junk.

i went to carmax and they overcharge like crazy, go to the place across from them, its called auctiondirect
they buy at auction and sell it to you for $400 more with warranty etc

i would look for places that sell cars that were previously owned by other people

they are more likely to have used cars

people's yards (you will know the cars are for sale because the cars will typically be in the vicinity of "for sale" signs, and you will know they are used because they are sitting in people's yards)

keep cash handy and when you see a car you like in the food lion parking lot you can wait next to it until the owner emerges from food lion with their groceries and you can offer to buy their car and you can mention that you'll even drop them off at home and help them carry their groceries

i would not go there, you might get hit in the face with a pie

i would go to a different place that also sells cars but does not have pies
