I'm flying to Puerto Rico on Friday and I asked my friend if he wanted anything... he's 23 and said he asked if I could pick up a wicked local bottle of rum. I doubt that'll be hard, but would I have to check said bottle of rum?

i think if you buy it in the duty free airport shop its ok. i dunno if you put it in your checked bag or carry it on the plane though.

i think there MIGHT be a rule about traveling w/ alcohol on domestic US flights. i can't remember. i just know one time i went abroad w/ someone and they brought alcohol back and it was fine for getting it into the country but then we had a connecting flight or whatever and it wasn't fine.

i don't really know

i'm sure you can google it!

^

That's the rule for carry-on liquids. Doesn't matter what the liquid is.

do you mean carry on as in your carry on bag?

so he'll be fine if he checks it, right?

i'm pretty sure you can bring it on if its from the inside the airport duty free things that are after security. i brought on a water bottle last time i flew but it was ok cause it was purchased IN the airport after all the security.

but when in doubt its better just to check it

Just my two cents, but the 3 oz. bottles thing is probably one of the dumber of all the stupid TSA regs.

^ 190% agree.

^^ Yes, you could carry-on alcohol bought after security, but why the hell would you spend $texas at the airport when you could spend a lot less on the outside and just throw it into your checked luggage?

depending on how much it costs to check baggage, it might be cheaper to pay the extra for the liquor at the airport than check a bag specifically b/c of the bottle. some people (like me) don't check baggage if they can help it.

not if your flight is international (you should get one free).

I just flew to London and back last week. If you are buying the liquor at the duty free store in the airport on your way out of the country, you can put it in your carry on bag and take it with you. When you come back through, though, you're going to have to check it.

Also, (if you're taking a connecting flight home like I did) then they will make you grab your bags when you land at your first airport in America (to go through customs). If you buy liquor at the duty free store then, it's still required to go into your checked baggage before you put it on the conveyor for your return flight back home.

Yeah, I think all of them charge to check bags now, so for the past few years I just carry on everything - a small suitcase and a backpack.

As far as the liquid regulations go, in my experience they aren't well enforced, my brother-in-law got on the plane with a tube of toothpaste, shaving cream, and even a razor, he just didn't show them to TSA when they asked. Also, I typically bring an empty Nalgene bottle and fill it up at the water fountains once I get in and I've not been asked once to show that the bottle is empty.

Yeah I haven't flown domestic in the US in over four years so I forget things like that. My flights are always international these days

you're right, they're not well enforced and every airport is different in how crazy they get. sure your BIL might have gotten through (and btw, shaving razors are fine, no one will take them away from you) but its not guaranteed and you risk having to throw your shit away if you get caught. the fact that they are inconsistent doesn't mean they won't make you throw it away when you get busted

also, are you kidding me with the water bottle? they can tell there is nothing in there. "proving" its empty is a waste of time. i carry an empty water bottle all the time. if you think you're gaming the system with that one, you are more of a novice traveler than i initally thought

lol yeah nalgenes/water bottles are standard carry items for people who travel even occasionally

in the phoenix airport they made me toss a container of hair product because it was 3.3 oz, too much pomade.

i was miffed because it was a $16 brand new jar. I had taken the same jars through about 20 different airports before one tsa guy just had to be a prick that morning

haha

that sucks ^

in the future, you should scratch off the .3 or whatever the overage amount is

i travel with a 4oz thing of moisturizer but i know im risking it and if someone wants to look at all my containers, i know it could be thrown out

Its actually quite to the contrary. The bottle is camo, you can't see in it at all, and nobody has even picked it up or shook it to make sure it was empty. It could have easily been full

If it was completely full (no air bubbles) would they be able to differentiate between it being full or empty? I didn't think so, but I could be wrong...

Regardless, I don't have much faith in their abilities to decipher what they see from the xrays anyway, as I said before I saw two bags pass through, both of which had prohibited items that would have been very easy to distinguish, so I stand by my claim that they had no way of knowing if I had anything in it or not

Regardless of if they can see in it, you're not supposed to bring fluids through security, which is why they make you throw out water bottles and crap you're carrying.

X-rays will go straight through water, so only the bottle would show.

So yes, they should be asking to see inside your Nalgene, but they don't because they're all lazy fucktards who occasionally powertrip.
