And that is just human nature. ... Your pretty head is in a real struggle right now. I'm at the same place.' On May 31, Clendenin wrote: 'U r gonna so pay for that. I promise an inch at a time. Kidding with u. Well not the inch at a time. Don't be scarred.' The patrol also did not release digital photos transmitted with the text messages, sometimes late at night. Clendenin's replies suggest the photos may have been explicit. 'Send me a pic,' Clendenin texted on June 6 at 5:36 p.m. 'Sweet Yup Damn Mmmmmm When u gonna wear those?? They look hot U been on a shopping spree. Lol Mmmmmm I like themmmm. :p' The messages were sent in April, May and the first half of June. They were sent both during work hours and in the evenings and number in the thousands. Clendenin served as a spokesman for the patrol for nine years before being promoted to major and assuming new duties in March. His departure is another blow for an agency that has seen a string of incidents of misconduct. Troopers have recently been fired for driving drunk, abusing animals and posting objectionable videos online. But most of the problems on the male-dominated force have involved troopers' interactions with women. Since 1998, at least 30 members of the patrol have been disciplined or fired for sexual misconduct, including having sex while on duty and assaulting women during traffic stops. Clendenin, who lives in Clayton, issued a written statement last week denying he had a physical relationship with Maynard. He released another written statement today. 'I used poor judgment while exchanging text messages with a co-worker,' Clendenin's statement said today. 'Most of our messages had little meaning because we both were cutting up; however, I realize my conduct was not professional and this should not have happened. I have apologized to my family, friends, Secretary (Reuben) Young, and Colonel (Randy) Glover for the embarrassment my actions have caused.'"
