I got no fucking clue what it means to be cultured these days. I figure it means someone that has cultivated the major achievements of human thought. But what does that include these days?

So help me get cultured up.

1) What 5 novels should everyone read?
2) What 5 films should everyone see?
3) What 5 musical works should everyone be familiar with (this could be albums, operas, what ever)

Lay it on me.

i'm not sure you can become "cultured" by knowing 5 items in each category

that is like, the opposite of cultured.

I don't think there's a set list of books or films that people need to read in order to be "cultured."

I do think it requires more than five though.

every feasible project must have a finite scope and metrics for success.
a set structure also will make posting easier.

consider this step 1 on me being a more well rounded human being.

obtaining culture is not like a science fair project. at this rate, you won't even get one of those "participant" ribbons.

Today is the 25th anniversary of Back to the Future, so you should watch that just to celebrate. Had that movie not been made in 1985 then BTTFII wouldn't have been made in 1989 and Pizza Hut never would have made solar shades.

this is what i get for making threads late at night in chit chat.

its not like i actually expect anyone on this board to be cultured (as already illustrated). I am just looking for some conversation while im sitting here on my lonesome. instead i get trolling. oh well.

Is that him? AHA, I actually think I adore him now!!! He looks awesome.

I'm just still annoyed with him for becoming a McCain supporter after months of being #1 Clinton fan.

not every important thing can be precisely measured

this fact is why education reform is so difficult

5 books:
1981
Some of the bible. Not enough to make sense of it, just enough to spout off when it's brought up.
The rest you can get from a good newspaper. Be current on local, national, and international events. This week? Probably the oil spill, economic recovery stalling, presidential policies (and if they're working), debt, world cup, and if you're me in Hope Mills, the dam failing.

5 movies:
American History X, Pi, a beautiful mind, ferris beulers day off, Downfall

5 musical works (you should be able to pick these out when playing):
Tchaikovsky - Nutcracker Suite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83hlFAYShHE
Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 "Choral" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq-3B6xfNpY
Holst - Planets Suite (start here) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrBXtI1jd6k
Handel - Messiah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76RrdwElnTU
Copland - Appalachian Spring http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RXLwtvGH9c

as for what translation to choose...the one most influential to literature is the KJV, but more accurate ones include the NET, ESV, and NRSV, the last of which is preferred by scholars and can be obtained by scrolling to the bottom of this page: http://tnp.theeggbeater.net/websites/maps/www.anova.org/sev/index.html
