when i used to grade papers for my English teacher in high school, i would scribble out "alot" to the point of the pen going through the paper

We had TAs in high school that helped grade papers.

^^ sure. i thought it was pretty common to let your exceptional students help grade papers and tests

I have never heard of that in high school. It would make sense to me for something like a math test, but not really papers. Those are so subjective and I wouldn't think a high school peer would grade the same as a teacher.

When I was a junior or senior some of us got recruited to help out the, uh, "writing challenged" freshmen/sophomore class by critiquing their papers once. It was

We did peer edits all the time, but they had no measurable effect on our grades.
