Palacio was placed under arrest and charged with animal cruelty -- a Class A Misdemeanor -- which is punishable for up to one year in jail along with a $1,000 fine. He is scheduled to go before a judge in the town of Yorktown criminal court on July 22. The animal's death comes during a string of days where temperatures have soared to as high as 103 degrees in the Tri-state area. "

Nope. And I'm sure there are lots of dogs that could survive without a human...stop trying to humanize them so thoroughly. We get it, some people are absolutely in love with their dogs. Many of them to the point where they'll allow it to suffer rather than doing what needs to be done (ie Old Yeller technique). But that doesn't mean we should ruin people's lives because they made a mistake that caused an animal to die.

I am personally a fan of connecting two independent clauses with a comma and coordinating conjunction, and then connecting two of those pairs with a semicolon to make a long but not run-on sentence.
