Seriously though, my pizza hierarchy:
For single slices, soups, pasta, and talking to a cool Italian dude named Sylvio:
1. Sylvia's 2. Sylvia's 3. Sylvia's
For whole pizzas:
1. Lily's 2. Moonlight 3. Mellow Mushroom 7/11/2010 6:35:25 PM |

So only Italians are able to analyze pizza, then?
...And don't even try to mention NY or Boston in here. One of them makes cardboard with toppings and the other makes soup in a bread bowl with cheese on top.7/11/2010 6:58:22 PM |

Eh, maybe I haven't had anything you'd truly consider NY style, but what I've seen of pizza that claims to be NY style seemed to follow four basic instructions:
1. Get super-thin crust 2. Put a little bit of sauce and cheese on top 3. Now burn the shit out of the bottom of it 4. Now bathe it in grease for a few hours
The result is greasy cardboard with some toppings.
Then again, when I had pizza in NY City itself (which didn't explicitly claim to be NY style), it wasn't very different from the general american style of pizza, aside from being more carefully prepared and generally better. So maybe it's just the exports that suck huge dick.

No. I wasn't saying that. But Boston isn't really a style of pizza, though. The fact is that 95% of all pizza places in America are knockoffs of either New York/New Haven style or Chicago style...7/11/2010 7:13:49 PM |

So you're saying you haven't even had pizza in NY to base your opinion on?
It's not the pizza being in NY that makes it good. It's not a North/South/East/West thing. It's that there are a lot of places in NY that do know how to make great pizza, partially stemming from the fact that they've been doing it there longer than anyone else. There are also more mediocre places than any place on earth.
Now the whole Chicago/NY style thing is a sheer preferential argument. I like both styles if done properly, but I'm still partial to NY style. 7/11/2010 7:15:44 PM |
