I hope you find it. I was pretty pissed when someone ruined my Macbook Pro 2.5 years ago, which actually sitting on my night stand. I ended up having to buy another one (which is sitting right in front of me).

Well it could be both.

I lost my laptop. eg I left it on the park bench, forgot about it, looked everywhere for it, remembered that I left it on the park bench, and when I went to go get it it wasn't there. Someone stole my laptop.

^^ What the fuck is wrong with you? You think it's OK to take a laptop that's sitting unattended? A dollar bill (or a $20 bill) sitting on the ground in a parking lot with nobody around is one thing...its owner almost certainly doesn't know it's missing until long after he would even know where to start looking for it, and there's no way to trace it to the owner.

A laptop, even they were dumb enough to walk off without it, isn't something that the owner is just going to flat-out lose and not even remember where to go back and check for it. On top of that, there's enough information on a laptop that you should be able to trace it to its owner unless it's password protected...and even then, you could put ads on Craigslist, local bulletin boards, etc, saying that you found it.

If you take an unattended laptop, you're a goddamn common thief...no different from a shoplifter or burglar.

We do not live in some magical Utopia where random strangers are going to wipe your ass with rainbows.

Dude made a mistake by leaving his shit in public and thus he got burned. I'm not saying I would take it if I saw it lying around, but you can't be blaming other people for your dumb mistakes.

I'm not saying it isn't a mistake. It doesn't justify theft, though.

Neither am I saying that you have to wide a stranger's ass with rainbows. I'm saying that if you can't do a good deed, at least don't go around fucking people.

The correct and moral thing to do would be notify the local police and drop it off there, they will give it back to you if no one comes forward within 30 days.

Almost.... You see, it's not really stolen if it was lost first. If I leave my property somewhere I can't legally "park" it, I am giving it up -- you can't rob me of it. I can't go around town leaving my stuff on benches and sidewalks and expect any of it to still be there later.

You guys that disagree are seriously living in a fantasy world where random strangers wipe your ass with rainbows.

Whoever found the laptop definitely isn't a thief for picking it up. They do have a moral obligation to make an effort to return it IMO, but you're a damn fool if you think everyone shares the same morals. The guy definitely lost it as opposed to having it stolen.

I found an iPod touch in the Sam's Club parking lot a while back. I left a note at the customer service desk with my number and a lady called to claim it a little while later. Had she not called and had I not been able to find any other way to contact the owner I would not have felt like a thief at all for keeping it and enjoying it myself.

I found a wallet ON the road in Cary, on Piney Plains while out jogging one day.

my gf and I drove to Holly Springs to take it to its rightful (very wealthy) owner. He was very gracious.

offered me $40. I declined.

that's the kind of nigga I'm is.

^ Yeah I used to work for a store that for some God unknown reason people were always forgetting their wallets there. If there was a driver's license in the wallet I would look up their number and tell them to come get their wallet. If there wasn't I'd call the bank of whatever credit card was in the wallet and tell them to contact their customer. Couple of times I got offered money bucks but I just want people to pay it forward

My wallet one time fell out of my pocket at a movie theater. I called the movie theater, they said they had it. I had a friend drive me down there (I was a lowly freshman who did not have a car at the time).

I went and got it. I had no money in it, I had a debit card in it though. Everything was in there, except the debit card... Funny. Kind of a dumb thing to take from someone's wallet. I just called up and cancelled it that day.It was more of an inconvenience though, having to wait for a new debit card to arrive.

um, the ugly reality is that if you leave something somewhere unintentionally, in all likelihood someone will steal it. You're a dumbass if you leave something valuable unattended, but the person who took it is still a fucking thief.

I don't know man. If you lose something I think you have to consider it a bit of luck if you get it back rather than an act of thievery if you don't. In the past 6 months I have FOUND an iPod touch and a cell phone; both of which I was able to return to their rightful owners. I neither asked for, received, nor expected a reward for either. I was glad to return them to their rightful owners, but I damn sure wouldn't let anyone call me a thief if I hadn't been able to link up with the owners and get them back to them. There has to be some personal responsibility for the person who loses something of value.

I guess if you see something of value that has obviously been left behind by it's owner it is better to let it sit out in the rain until an unscrupulous person comes along and takes it than to pick it up yourself on the gamble that you'll keep it if you can't find the owner after a reasonable amount of effort. Otherwise you're a hardcore thief.

Oh yeah, I found some guys car keys with the remote fob at the farmers market seafood restaurant the other day. I don't know why I found the owner and returned them to him rather than finding his car and stealing it as my thieving ass was compelled to do. I guess I'm slipping. I'm sure he would have rather I left his keys sitting on the floor near the cash registers because if you touch them you're a thief.

That's a little bit different though. I agree that if you pick up a laptop, do your best to find the owner, and no owner emerges then that's that. But if you pick it up with the express intention of never trying to look for the owner and you're thinking, "SWEET! FREE LAPTOP!" then I question your morals.

I would think with something like a Macbook you could bring it to the Apple store and they could find the owner via the serial number? I don't really know how that works but that would probably be what I'd do.

In the eyes of the law you are thief unless you are genuinely unable to find the owner, simple as that.

Quote :
"However, this argument would be unlikely to prevail in light of State v. Moore, 46 N.C. App. 259 (1980). In Moore, the defendant and two friends found a bag marked “Bank of North Carolina” lying on a sidewalk outside a pharmacy. They picked up the bag and split the money they found inside. The defendant was charged with, and convicted of, receiving stolen goods. She argued on appeal that the money was found, not stolen, but the court of appeals affirmed. It held that when a person finds lost property, “the duty of the finder is to keep the property for the purpose of finding the owner,” at least where there is a “clue to ownership,” i.e., some way to determine who the owner is. Furthermore, the finder “must use reasonable means for the purpose of finding the owner.”"

So yes, something that was lost can be stolen.

I wouldn't call you a thief, just a bad, immoral person. I think it takes more effort to be an actual thief, just like it takes effort to be a good, moral person and try to return someone's lost goods. So you're lazy and not a good person because you won't take the extra effort to return someone's lost shit.

But you are not a thief.

That "everyone doesn't share the same morals" line is bullshit. What if my personal morals dictate that I shoot thieves in the head? Does that make it OK for me to waste someone who picks up a laptop from a bench? I mean, they're my personal morals, and the victim is a dumbass for stealing.

Exactly. Add integrity and maturity to the list, too.

Oh come the fuck on...obviously nobody is equating stealing an unattended laptop to picking up lost keys and find their rightful owner (although I must assume that a person who lost his keys couldn't possibly be but so far away, and will likely come back for them in short order...so in most circumstances, I figure I'd be doing more harm than good to pick them up and try to help)

Agree that the law is bad, and you shouldn't need the law to tell you right from wrong.

However, you actually need some motherfucking morals to make that argument and have it carry weight. Moral cripples like you are the exact reason that laws like that one exist.

Quote :
"Sure I would (and I have), but not doing so doesn't mean I stole it. They lost it. I found it and kept it. No theft has occurred."

Bullshit. If you try to return it and succeed, then good for you. If you try to the reasonable utmost of your ability and fail, then they lost it and you found it. If you don't go to reasonable lengths to locate the owner and return the item, you're a fucking thief.

Dude, it's okay. You don't get it. You want to blur a logical line to include morally repugnant acts in what we call "theft".
Is it not theft. It may be wrong, immoral, immature, whatever, but it is not theft.

Your use of the word "fucking" suggest you're speaking from emotion, and not reason. (busted!)

The laptop in this case doesn't become common property because someone left it on accident. What if it has something along the lines of "property of xx" - do you still not consider it stealing? You're still taking the property of someone wrongfully.

Anyone arguing that taking a laptop off a park bench is equivalent to forcibly breaking into someone's place of residence and stealing it is fucked in the head.

This isn't Mayberry...if you leave an object of value fully visible in a public location, expect it to be gone when you return.

Look, nobody's arguing that. Everyone expects it to be stolen when you return. That it's common and can be expected has no impact on it being theft.

Theft != Breaking and Entering + Burglary.

Picking up this laptop with no intention of returning it to its rightful owner = theft.
