Not to dissuade you from any of these other fine posters offerings, but you can go to Home Depot and get white showerboard (I believe it's called showerboard), cut it into two pieces or get them to, and use dry erase markers on that. It's basically a pressed board with some kind of waterproof white coating on one side. I did that in my apartment for years and it worked really well and is a much cheaper option.

They also sell a whiteboard and chalkboard style paint that may be a cheaper/easier option

1. i already looked at local craigslist and they want $40 for just a 3x4 board
2. norfolk is way too far
3. heavy as crap is not gonna work...and it sounds too big
4. i have actually made several whiteboards before from the showerboards and adding wood triming for the frame but i have had to nail these directly into the wall....i was hoping for something more portable and hangable

i might have to go with #4 again if i can't find suitable alternatives

A couple of these will do the job and they're like $.50 at Home Depot.

I got my huge whiteboard from NC State Surplus (North Carolina the state, not NC the university) iirc.

but how do you get the trim to stay on the board and then strong enough to hang it by the trim and not have the board fall off loose from the trim.

It's called backer board or tile board
