I've yet to understand why we needed to "plug the damn hole." I mean, we drill for oil, right? And oil is/was flowing at an intense rate out of this well, right? Siphon it, sell it, profit.
Of course, if we're just talking about stopping the oil from leaking into the ocean, that's a different matter. And BP should be held accountable for any wrongdoing, but the company needs to keep selling its oil to be helpful to anyone on a long-term basis. 7/15/2010 6:02:00 PM |

^^^ It's a fair point. I was simply suggesting that engineers are not demigods as some here seem to think.
We need the dreamers, too. Someone has to dream it up before the engineers can build it--and then someone has to maintain it, and someone has to secure it, and someone has to administer it, and someone has to legally defend it, and so on. You see? It takes all kinds to make projects work and the world to go around.
^^ Why, because you tried critical thinking for the first time?

Gusher stops; BP might still have to siphon oil Testing blocks leak completely, but don't be surprised if oil flows again
Quote : | "But National Incident Commander Thad Allen issued a statement later in the day, deeming it 'likely' that "we will return to the containment process using this new stacking cap connected to the risers to attempt to collect up to 80,000 barrels of oil per day until the relief well is completed." |

I swear I had no prior knowledge of this. All I did was think--you don't have to be an engineer to do that or to pwn Internet buffoons.
80,000 (possible barrels oil/day) x $75.80 (current oil price/barrel) = $6,064,000 (possible sales total/day)
$6,064,000 x 30 days = $181,920,0007/17/2010 7:12:12 AM |

I'd suggest you read up about this well but that might be a little too engineer-y for you?
The Deepwater Horizon was an exploratory rig. It found the oil and was capping it so that later on a production rig could come back and produce the well. I don't know for sure, but as this is in deep water its possible they wouldn't come back to this well until the price of oil was even higher as it certainly cost more to produce a deepwater well.
The problem now is the casing buried into the earth is possibly damaged from the explosion so any attempts to produce it could result into a full blown blowout with the BOP sinking into the earth and what is left would be a fully uncontrolled gusher. The current stopping of the flow was to check the pressure and it's good but not good enough that they can say with certainty that the bore isn't damaged. At this point it could be seeping out somewhere into the earth or the well could have spewed so much oil that it has deflated some. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what the point of checking the pressure was unless these assholes think they can somehow salvage this operation. The blogosphere thinks this was nothing more than a political stunt.
The relief well will intersect the current bore but they'd still have no way of knowing where along the string the well is damaged if that is the case. So, the safest thing for everyone is to intersect it and then pump concrete into it all the way to the bottom, sealing the initial bore in forever.7/17/2010 7:48:23 AM |

^ This told me nothing new. In any event, in the meantime, officials will "likely" be siphoning "up to 80,000 barrels of oil per day"--and about "34.3 million gallons" has already been collected just since May.
And I realize that you don't fully grasp public policy and politics, Chance, but here's yet another incentive to keep siphoning the well:
Feds: BP must pay royalties on oil from Gulf spill July 15, 2010
Quote : | "The government says BP will be required to pay royalties for oil collected from its blown-out deepsea well." |
Quote : | "The Interior Department said those sales also would be subject to a fee of 18.75 percent of the revenue. And BP would be responsible for paying additional fees if it violated federal law." |

Quote : | "I've yet to understand why we needed to "plug the damn hole."" |
I gave you the explanation, then you said it was nothing new. Impossible.
The hole has to be plugged because the integrity of the well is in question. I'm not quite sure what is hard to understand about that.7/17/2010 8:38:12 AM |
