I just made an account. I don't much see what I can gain from it. I added some grad school folks, will probably add some work folks when I start. Has anyone discovered what it can be good for?

^ I mean, I've had head hunters come after me on there. And it really is a valuable resource when job searching, just because you are able to make contact with people in the field that you want to be in. You can rate others (from a work experience perspective), blah blah blah.

It's useful if you use it right.
If you're a housewife that watches Oprah all day... yeah, not so much.

I use it as a network of people I would accept from or give professional references to.

LinkedIn is pretty amazing with my job hunt right now. I got my lead to one company I'm pursuing because one employee there was connected to one of my professors. The professor was on his PhD defense committee. I emailed the professor to introduce me through email, contacted the guy, and sent my resume. He's going to bring my name up and hopefully something comes out of it.

I also found a similar company in Charlotte but I had no connections there.

That makes a lot of sense. I really tried to add a lot of folks I know would be connected to my industry down the road... fellow grad students/group members, etc. I just got my job a couple weeks ago, and what I figured was that it may be useful to use LinkedIn to build (well, manage/catalog, really) my professional network while at my current job for if I wind up leaving in the future.

I'm going to be in a position where I deal with a large number of clients, doing consulting type stuff for them, but it may not necessarily be in a very personal manner. I'm terrible at remembering names/specifics about folks I meet, so this will probably be helpful in that regard as well. If I do good work for someone, or interact with them on more than one project, this is the kind of thing that will let me keep their contact stuff in place.

Yeah, I added former bosses, non-CHE friends that were on LI, classmates who were on LI, and professors who were on LI. Basically people who would be near my professional field (chemical engineering) or used to be in it.
