FINALLY

now i have a question: my dog is itchy. she had flea medicine recently (it hasn't been an entire month yet). its summer so i've found a flea here and there on her but she doesn't have an outbreak or anything. but she's super itchy and her skin is really pink.

suggestions? i don't want to reapply flea stuff too soon - or can i? i bathed her with oatmeal soap (for dogs) like a week ago...it seemed to help for a little. but she's back to scratching and has some spots that are super pink/raw.

Make a flea trap.

You need a shallow bowl, dish, or pan. Anything that will hold water and is shallow.
Fill it with water, and add liquid soap to it. The liquid soap is to break the surface tension in the water so the flea will sink and drown.
Set the dish on the floor and place a desk lamp over the dish to heat up the water. This will draw the fleas to want to jump into the heat.

You'll need to leave it up to not only catch the fleas you have now but long enough for any eggs that have yet to hatch. Once the eggs hatch and they jump in and die you should be done with fleas.

You'll be amazed at how many fleas you find in the bottom of the dish.

There is sunscreen for pets. Dogs can get sunburnt if they are out for a long time, and especially if they have lighter fur along with light skin. So if you think it could be something like that, maybe try some sunscreen.

^^ is there a shelter or aspca down that way? they ALWAYS have lab mix puppies in shelters. like always always. i'd check a shelter if you are not opposed to that sort of thing

of course there is no guarantee that they will be 40-50lbs. they can only give you a guess. but i got my dog from the shelter (no idea what she is...pointer/lab probably) and she is 49lbs and should be done growing so she is pretty perfect

also i found this dry skin spray for animals that you can get at pet stores (googled) its supposed to help with dry itchy skin. cause i don't think it is fleas she doesn't have fleas. maybe one or two here and there but she's on frontline and i've looked all over her for fleas and only have found 1. 1 is not making her this itchy/rashy.

might come to raleigh for a 1 hour 45 min drive then have more than one set of puppies to look at.

can you give more details or the website you got the idea form (if you got it online)

i.e. what wattage bulb? how far from the water? how long do you leave it up? do you leave the dog in the room the whole time you have it up?

I didn't get it from a website, it's what my family always does anytime a pet gets fleas.

It doesn't matter what type of bulb you use, just a regular desk lamp. You know the type that you can bend the neck down. Just make sure the light is directly over the water. It doesn't have to be that close either.

You have to leave it up for a week or two, and your dog can be around it. It's just water and soap. If you dog drinks it she will just burb bubbles.

Well I would put it where you think the fleas are the worst. You might even put more than one up. One where she sleeps and another where she spends a lot of time.

If you notice they are where you sleep too you might put on in your room.

well after using various dips shampoos and other sorts of things she's finally flea-free for the most part, but i'm gonna try this next time and see if it works rather than dropping $50+ on crap that barely works

Yeah, we normally will wash our dog with a flea shampoo, that is not expensive. Then we spray them with something to make all the fleas jump off. Then set up that trap. We will be flea free after that.

Here is a video of Buster when we sprayed him with the flea shit. All the fleas started jumping around and he was like wtf is going on?

her skin is just so pink and she's very itchy. she has had flea medicine w/in a month so i don't want to give it to her. i can find a flea on her every now and again but never more than one at a time. she has white short fur so they're easy to find. so i don't think it is a flea problem.

i bathed her like a week or so ago and don't want to do that again because bathing can dry out the skin. i just feel so bad for her and i don't know what it could be :/

she hasn't been to the dog park or around any other animals recently. she goes outside to pee and poop and walk but doesn't spend like extended time outside in the heat or lying in the dirt/grass. hmmmmm. thoughts?

yea POSSIBLY maybe? except her hair isn't falling out and she doesn't really have like pussy wet sores or anything

i was thinking maybe scabies but i feel like i'd be itching at this point since she sleeps in bed with me and stuff

i don't know WHAT it is. i googled to see if i could find pictures of what it looks like she has and most of what i found with pink itchy skin was just allergic reaction. like it said she could get one mosquito or flea bite and just be allergic

so apparently benadryl is safe for dogs if you do the dosage by weight so i'm going to try benadryl (per a vet phone call tomorrow) and see if that helps clear it up at all

if not we will be making an actual appt with the vet

has anyone given their dog benadryl before?

you can put flea stuff on them as often as every 2 weeks, according to my vet. i've done it every 3. it takes A LOT for them to overdose. the packaging read something like 114 doses. we've switched from topical ones to comfortis (chewable tablet) b/c all the topicals weren't effective enough. comfortis has been a god-send. it does not protect against ticks though.

my dog has a severe flea allergy, which causes very red, very itchy skin. she eventually gets sores that get infected and requires antibiotics & steroid shots. it's possible you dog has this too. if so much as ONE flea gets on my dog, she breaks out and we end up at the vet for meds. i have to be very careful. in my experience, the anti-itch spray stuff doesn't work.

my dog also has severe corn and moderate pollen/seasonal allergies. she takes a claritin or zyrtec everyday. we've done benadryl but it only lasts 4 hours and made her sleepy. all of those meds are very safe for dogs. mine is 50lbs, so 1 pill of either claritin or zyrtec, or 2 benadryl is what she takes.

My dog has the flea allergy. If he gets bitten once he breaks out.

This stuff is a really good shampoo for itchy skin. It is called Ketobenz or Malaseb shampoo.

I'm flying southwest with my kitty in two weeks.
I need to get a carrier. Any recommendations?

How's the $45 price point on the carrier linked here? (Which also has the size constraints I'll be working with).

I've heard tell of soft-sided carriers that have a collapsible internal frame. I'm waiting til I'm back in Raleigh to shop, because I want to look into these. Think they'll be worth my time?

I have this one for her (but not in pink ), but it's not tall enough for her to sit up completely in, and I don't want to risk being denied boarding b/c of that fact. That, and she may actually wish to sit up in the ~6+hrs she'll be in it. Re-reading the regulations, they don't require her to be able to sit up - just stand up and move freely, which she can. But her carrier is still too tall >.<

my question is: if a dog has a toenail completely extracted and it starts growing back in...would that cause any pain?

months ago...like this late winter/early spring, my dog snagged her nail on a root/rock/something and it ripped most of the way out, lots of blood and then we took her to the vet and they removed the ENTIRE nail

so there has just been an empty hole in her paw for awhile. now the nail is starting to grow back and i san see a tiny tip of it sticking out. she's been lifting up her foot recently and just standing on 3 legs like she's in pain or something. and when she jumps up and down she is really careful not to put much pressure on that foot. she doesn't limp when she walks or runs around (and she's been running) but i've just noticed her holding it up randomly and then being tender on it when jumping up/down. i don't think she's hurt herself, i don't see anything stuck in the paw, so i all i can think of is the nail thing. but i don't know.

thoughts? i mean it doesn't seem like a huge deal. she doesn't seem in pain 98% of the time. and i don't know if the holding it up is due to pain or because it feels weird or what.
