Where is it?
I used to go to Schiano's for their calzones but I heard they got sold off a couple years ago so I wonder if it's still good.
Also, not a calzone but that pizza place on Harrison Avenue in front of the Embassy Suites has this thing called a spinach pizza wrap (maybe? Forget the actual name...) that is AMAZING. It's close to a calzone and I crave one right now 7/18/2010 11:29:17 PM |

Lilys isn't really that good. I mean, it's cool to go there when you're slumming and you want to sit outside, but you don't really go there for the food itself. Just some giant blob of cheese and pizza sauce slapped together by a dirty vegan, straightedge, or insert title here. I only go there when I'm drinking. 7/18/2010 11:40:11 PM |

I like the pizza at Lilly's but have never been a fan of the calzones. The sauce to crust ratio is not to my liking. 7/18/2010 11:43:48 PM |

I realize people get a lot of mileage on this site by including derisive references to hipsters in their posts, but grow the fuck up. I don't care if it's a monkey wearing a bandana assembling my food as long as it's good. Also if you think that squeaky clean preppies are making your food at any restaurant you're fucking delusional.7/19/2010 12:33:11 AM |

i have a lilly's story.
i like their food BUT one time i was there eating (duh) and you know how they have like the mixed green salads (with all the weird like stem looking things and leaf looking things and different colored lettuce) so i was just stabbing away eating my salad and i went to stab a brownish/reddish piece of green
it had wings
it was a moth
it was alive
kinda wanted to barf.

I like the calzones at Lilly's. In my experience, calzones at Mellow Mushroom can vary wildly -- the one I had in Winston was great, the one I had in Raleigh wasn't very good. I think that's mainly because the one in Winston didn't use ricotta cheese, while the one in Raleigh did.
Meanwhile, the calzones at Moonlight Pizza are pretty mediocre. 7/19/2010 11:12:52 AM |

I always thought that calzones would be the cruelest thing to feed to the population of a besieged city
first let them spend 6-8 weeks eating grass soup, pine cones, rats, and shoe-leather, totally maybe 500 calories a day
and then when they finally surrender, give them each an enormous greasy piece of bread stuffed with sausage, pepperoni, onions, green peppers, mushrooms and ricotta cheese
it would probably be kinder just to run them through with your sword] 7/19/2010 11:54:29 AM |

Strombolis have pizza sauce, and do not have ricotta. They are usually of a vaguely cylindrical shape. Calzones do not have pizza sauce inside (though it is often provided for dipping), and do have ricotta. They are usually of a half-moon, crescent, or triangular shape.

In practical terms, "generally" may mean "likely" (more than 50%), but it actually means something else.
Had I said "Calzones usually always have ricotta.", or "Calzones most likely always have ricotta.", your joke would apply. But I'm talking about "in the generalized sense", which is distinct from "with a likelihood".
So, yes: Calzones generally always have ricotta.7/19/2010 1:11:03 PM |

I said Lilly's earlier, but I'll list the places I'll actually get a calzone/stromboli and enjoy it enough to order it again
Lilly's Ruckus Sauced
haven't had any other ones in raleigh that I would get again, and that is including that "stromboli's" place or whatever it is on edwards mill and sylvia's. Someone bothered to make a voting list for this, so here is the link- looks like Lilly's tops their list too. there are definitely some places on there I would try out though (notably in the top 5-10):
