Name some things when having too much expertise is actually NOT better.

For example, I can now tell the quality difference between an mp3 that's recorded in 128 kbit versus an mp3 that's recorded in 320 kbit. The downfall is that I can't tolerate 128 kbit mp3s anymore and I have to download a 320 kbit recorded songs that are almost twice the filesize.

12 years ago I get off on 100x100 pixels of a boob.

Now I need...vastly more complex, nuanced and rare material.

when all I want is a no-bullshit workhorse half-ton and a friend pushes my (inner-shadetree mechanic) diesel grease-monkey tendency to fruition and I end up going well over budget for a beautiful, dreamy money-pit that ignites an addiction sated only by purchasing new tools, aftermarket performance parts, and gratuitous accessories I can ill-afford. Now I'm slave to a laundry list of largely unnecessary and dorky performance upgrades for both my 2-wheeled and 6-wheeled toys whilst I attempt with frustrating futility to sell (for what it's actually worth) the only practical vehicle I own, a 4-wheeled-4-door-4-banger Saturn.

This on top of my drive for going above and beyond the requisite equipment necessary for being a drummer, guitar player, bassist, and singer. That on top of being a physical-media music enthusiast to begin with. That as well perched beyond my inner drive to purvey both quality and quantity, erstwhile and presently edifying myself via university accreditation.

I'm holding out for the lottery, either intellectual, revelational, or fiscal.

For rock climbing I've started to free solo b/c I feel more and more comfortable on exposed terrain without a rope. Not terribly smart....but super gratifying at the same time.

Also I get the mp3 thing.

Because I have a degree in Film studies, I can't enjoy the normal films that most people enjoy.

i dont think working at a movie theatre = expertise. unless your expertise lies in pouring icees and buttering popcorn.

i dont know if this belongs here or not but i was talking to someone about this the other day, and i think it's close enough...

i've been taking photograhs and having them taken for a very long while now. and i'm really into the emotional shots.
but the thing, i know what went on "behind the scenes", if you will, at every shot, so i look at an expression of mine and someone may say..."Wow, that's awesome" (which is super flattering) but i think it sucks because i know whats going on in my head at that moment.

i can't explain it. i guess its because i know its not a "real" expression, so it doesnt seem real to me.
make any sense?

i have a perfect example of one too.

^x5 This is one reason that some of the best wedding photographers use the photojournalist's approach. The "real" moments that are captured are much more moving and lasting than people simply posing for shots.

being a technology enthusiast, I built myself a home theater for not a whole lot of money that really puts most theater experiences in the raleigh area to shame. now im never interested in spending the $8-12 to see something once in the theater when that same money could buy it on bluray for me and I can enjoy a much better experience. unfortunately every girl I date and most of my friends love wasting money at the movies

I sound pretentious too often, because I spend a lot of time reading random Wikipedia articles and becoming informed about a lot of things. This leads me to offer up a "kind correction" on nearly every topic discussed.

i find it difficult to play video games for extended periods of time unless it is high def quality. same thing for watching tv. 15 years ago, i used to play the hell out of RBI base ball on 16 bit. i don't know if this is a downfall of expertise, or a downfall of technology.

This young woman will display an interest in your technological pursuits that is inconsistent with your heretofore limited experience with other females, and this will encourage you, but I warn you that the only reason she wants anything to do with you is because she needs someone to help set up her computer and get it on the network (with maybe a couple of pointers on how to find and download music). I fear for your little hearts, but forewarned is forearmed."

Pretty much any computer knowledge is both a blessing and a curse.

Bagpipes lost all their magic when I learned to play them. I mean, I still love them and I just found a band I might join . . . but I noticed botched grace notes and runs more than I used to. And I'm fucking sick of Amazing Grace (Flowers of the Forest FTW!)

after being in the aquatics industry for 6 years and teaching classes on everything that can go wrong in a swimming pool i tend to be unable to relax in a pool or hot tub and can smell if the water chemistry is wrong. i'm also can't help but noticing all the things i can sell to any pool i'm at and start running numbers in my head.
