http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2010/08/02/2010-08-02_lady_gaga_slams_arizona_immigration_law_during_phoenix_concert.html

Quote :
"Singer Lady Gaga joined the chorus of critics blasting Arizona's controversial new immigration law during a sold-out concert in Phoenix this weekend, the Arizona Republic reported.

"We have to be active. We have to protest. . . . I will yell and I will scream louder," the 24-year-old pop sensation told the sold-out audience at the US Airways Center. "I will hold you, and we will hold each other, and we will peaceably protest this state."

Polls find a majority of Americans support Arizona's SB 1070 law, which cracks down on illegal immigration, but the law has become a charged issue for critics and supporters alike.

A federal judge blocked the part of the law - which went into effect July 29 - that allowed police to detain people on suspected of being illegal immigrants as a violation of the constitutional ban on unreasonable search and seizure.

During Saturday's concert, Lady Gaga told the crowd about a boy she met earlier in the day who's home was raided over "a parking ticket or something," and whose brother was deported to Mexico, the newspaper reported.

Calling the case "disgusting," the star, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, dedicated the song "You and I" to the boy.

"I think it's important that people understand that it's a state of emergency for this place and this state," she said.

But Lady Gaga stopped short of dumping her Arizona tour dates like big name acts Kanye West and Rage Against the Machine who boycotted the state in protest of SB 1070.

"I got a phone call from a couple really big rock and rollers, big pop stars, big rap artists, and they said, 'We'd like you to boycott Arizona . . . because of SB 1070," she told the cheering crowd.

"I said, 'Do you really think that us dumb (expletive) pop stars are going to collapse the economy of Arizona?""

im so confused.

DO WE WANT ILLEGALS IN THE COUNTRY OR NOT?

People whine and fuss about illegals all the time. If anything, I'd want the illegals out of here just to hear these people stop whining.

It makes no sense why people would be against the bill that sends people back to their country.

If you're against the bill, then you must be FOR making citizens for all these illegals

I'm glad she stuck to her guns and did her best to protest the bill by showing as much opposition as possible, instead of trying to pander to people who oppose the bill while still trying to make bank on the concerts.

She should have told the boy that he's either an idiot or a liar and they would never get a warrant to raid a home over a parking ticket. I mean, that's what I would do. Then I'd make fun of him on stage.

You're the one who made it partisan by suggesting that she would alienate her concert attendees who supported SB1070.

But maybe you're right and most of her fans also like Toby Keith.

First of all, I never said anything about Republican or Democrats until you did. I also never said anything about alienating the concert attendees (they're obviously showing up in large numbers). I called her a hypocrite. I don't care what she believes in. But if she's going to go on some big spout about how she's against something that a certain state is doing and tell people that they should protest, then she should actually take her own advice and protest the state by not performing in it.

In other words, she should put up, or shut up. Being "active" isn't telling other people to be active. It's band-wagoning.

And that's why I avoided choosing whether her listeners are either Democrat or Republican. I'm sure she has listeners from both side. A lot of them are teenage girls. Any Democrat who isn't an idiot isn't going to buy into her bullshit of "protest the state and be active," when she's half-way to doing a strip tease in front of a packed stadium IN THE STATE SHE SAYS TO PROTEST! And any Republican who knows what's going on won't agree with her viewpoint. So what do you have left? People who don't know what's going on and who will buy into and believe anything that is coming out of her mouth! You know, the people who vote (if you're "lucky") for the guy who looks the best or has the nicest family or cutest wife, ect.

False.

being active is letting people know where you stand through either words or actions

you dont have to boycott to be active, that is stupid.

attending city council meetings is being active, even if you dont say a damn word or do anything else to be involved in the decisions made

and her doing a strip tease has nothing to do with Arizona Immigration Law, its not even relevant to bring up the composition of her concerts

Sorry, but I think you've confused "caring" with being active. I will agree with you that telling people to be active, is being active. But, what I meant was simply telling people to be active is pretty lazy on her part. If she feels as passionate about the immigration bill as she claims she does, then she should be more active. She should lead by example! She's one of the most popular people in the world, literally. And all she can muster up is some fucking speech? Sorry, but to me, it sound like she's just pandering to the people in attendance.

And I don't see someone as being active just by showing up to a city council meeting without doing anything to participate in it. All they're doing is showing an interest. That's not the same as being active.

And me putting in the strip-tease was to show where her priorities are. She would rather bring in the bucks then sacrifice some money and make a statement. If she cancelled tour dates in Arizona and put out an official statement claiming that it was in protest of Arizona's immigration bill, then it would probably garner more national and international media attention on the bill as well as motivating her fan base in Arizona to be more active (think of it this way, if you're a fan of Lady Gaga and she cancels her tour dates in your state because of Arizona's bill, you're going to be a bit more passionate about the issue because your state's decision effectively pissed of your favorite musician and caused you to have to wait at least another year to see her).

without reading the thread, i remember listening to an interview with AC/DC on an episode of the Alan Handleman show about 10 or 15 years ago. He asked them their opinion on the current political campaigns at the time to which either Angus or Brian replied:

[paraphrased] "Look, we are entertainers, not exactly what you would call scholarly academics. What I have to say on such matters should have no bearing on the political climate what so ever."

that was the moment that AC/DC went from cool to awesome for me.

/cool story bro.
