But 2010 very possibly is the worst year in the history of motion pictures." |
I actually didnt notice how bad this year was but it is bad, but i dont think its anywhere as bad as early 2000's were, those were the dark ages of movies
2010 so far:
Great movies: Inception
Really Good: How to train your dragon
Good: Toy Story 3 Shutter Island McGruber (dont knock it till you see it) Splice Book of Eli
Ok: Iron Man 2 Alice in Wonderland Prince of Persia Predators The A-Team
Bad:

The first Matrix is not one of the all-time greats, but don't kid yourself, it was an extremely influential movie. And fwiw, it's only August.

if citizen kane is considered a great movie, so must the matrix. kane was great because of the stuff it brought to the industry. but the movie itself is mediocre at best

Maybe so. I've been to the theater about 5 times in the last 7 or 8 years, and I was drug to Star Wars Ep 3 against my will - wouldn't have bothered otherwise. I haven't really bought any DVDs to speak of in the last few years and of the DVDs I did buy were for TV shows.
I guess most of what's coming out just doesn't appeal to me. There are a few movies that I wouldn't mind seeing, but certainly not for the price they charge at theaters. By the time a movie hits the $1.50 movies I usually forget about it, nothing memorable out there. 8/9/2010 8:39:50 AM |

There have actually been a number of memorable movies out in the past 8 years. Just because you can't get yourself interested doesn't mean they don't exist. 8/9/2010 9:15:27 AM |

I don't doubt it. I 'm still unlikely to change my theater going habits though.
These days it seems like the industry is relying on 3D as a draw. I'd be more inclined to come back if they would lower the ticket price.

i wouldn't even call this the worst year of the past decade let alone ever.
however, the only movies i've gone to see this year were Inception, how to train your dragon, ts3, Alice in Wonderland, and Despicable Me. I loved the first 3, was ok with the last 2. 8/9/2010 11:02:52 PM |

Because Winter's Bone rules so hard...After watching that, the next day I checked out a book from the library about crystal meth in small-town America. Somehow, I missed when that became such a big deal and had no idea about it being so popular in small towns in the midwest and mountain towns. 8/12/2010 3:02:08 PM |

The author of that article is a 60-year-old guy that misses his youth.
I really liked Shutter Island, thought Inception and Iron Man 2 were pretty good, Alice in Wonderland sucked.
Citizen Kane and The Matrix are awesome.

To the people that actually read the article:
The article is actually great writing and I enjoyed it for its entertainment, but I'm not sure I agreed with several of the points the author made. Basically the author seems to infer that a mountain of shit with a handful of diamonds is somehow worse than a heap of shit with just a few specks of diamonds. I do not agree that having a year with a lot of bad movies necessarily makes the good cinema that occurs during that year somehow less important to the industry as a whole. I'd argue that there's nothing about 2010 that's any different from any other year other than that maybe there was a larger amount of bad movies produced than recent years, but that has less to do with the quality of cinema and more to do with the expansion of the entertainment industry.
But that's not what the author says. He makes the whole thing quantitative, and why would you do that when arguing the value of a year to cinema?--not to the box office, not to movie rentals, but to cinema as cultural art. It simply doesn't make any sense to me. I'm sure there were a lot of really shitty movies that came out the same year as The Godfather or Citizen Kane--but that doesn't diminish how amazing those films were. Ultimately what we remember and what we valuable is the amount of good and reputable product that is seen, not how deep we had to dig through the shit to finally get to it.
EDIT: And look at the end of the article, how it's followed by an insert from an editor that completely undermines the entire concept of the article it's attached to. The added feature talks about movies that weren't considered very good at the time, but are now considered to be some of the best films ever.
