SO i can change my ip address easily if i'm connected directly to the modem by power cycling the modem
but beind my router i always get the same IP address
i've tried ip release/renew on the router and power cycling it

is there any way to change ip while behind the router?

or, don't turn off dhcp and instead use dhcp reservation to set the IP by its MAC address

Why do you need to do this?

There's no good reason you should need a different NATed IP address...

I'm assuming you are trying to change your public ip address, as changing your NATed IP doesn't make any sense.

I'd expect the following would work: release the ip on the router, reboot cable modem, renew ip on router.

It's lafta. It is not, by any means, a safe assumption that what he's trying to do makes any sense whatsoever.

lol - trying to game MegaVideo?

Unplug router and cable modem. Plug in modem, wait for lights to calm down, plug in router.

Depending on router setup you can DMZ your computer (which in some cases issues you the external IP) and refresh from there.

You could contact your ISP and ask for a new IP address. Tell them you accidentally locked yourself out of the VPN at work.

But the suggestions above to reboot the router and cable modem should work.

i've rebooted the modem/router before, doesnt work

this is what happens
When i'm plugged into my router, i check my ip and its the old one that i dont want
If i plug into the modem then power cycle the modem, i get a new ip address
if i then plug the router back in and i check my external ip again, its the same old one again

And yes its my external ip, i check it at http://whatsmyipaddress.com

i dont understand how that can happen, perhaps the ISP is assigning ip address based on the mac address of the router, if it has one, and it doesnt reset that unless the router is unplugged for some period of time
idk

I would help, but until you pay your bill with Frosh, I have to refuse service.
