seriously, people believed this story because the story was so insignificant that we could have faith that it wasn't fabricated.

Anyone can lie. Anyone can spread false rumors. I think they did a disservice to the community because there are imitators that love to exploit things like this.

Next stop: Lies backed up with falsified proof that can't be disproved.

Kinda like getting a job at DMV, making yourself a "REAL" fake ID. It's not fake anymore because it's an actual license, yet it's not real because it has fake information.
