ehh, How many directors does the "average movie goer" actually know by name?
And is being "known"/identifiable really the same as being appreciated? -- I know a lot of people who know Woody Allen is a "famous director" but have seen MAYBE a few of his films at most.
I think the thread title you intended was something like: "Good directors who do not have household names" OR "directors who deserve more fame"
I'd agree that Danny Boyle is not a "famous" director. But he is by no means under-appreciated.

I'm gonna add a serious submission: Rian Johnson, who directed Brick and The Brothers Bloom and has a hard sci-fi film coming out in 2011 called Looper.

the brothers bloom is fun but way too long
brick is pretty perfect, though
also, the interesting thing brought up in this thread is which directors are household names
spielberg, scorsese, cameron, tarantino, coppola, stone, howard, lucas?
i'm not sure whether to count someone like eastwood because he's a celebrity apart from being a director 8/11/2010 2:15:08 PM |
duro982 All American 3088 Posts user info edit post |
^ i would lean toward including Eastwood. He's had quite a few big movies since he was only known as an actor. And I think A LOT of people are aware of the fact the directed said movies. If not, then I'd say he definitely falls into lafta's group of people who should be better known as directors.
^^^ i'd disagree if we're going with lafta's original intention of directors that should have more marketable names.
A LOT of people have seen Danny Boyle's movies and liked them. They just don't realize they're Danny Boyle's movies.
"From the director of 'Slumdog Millionaire', 'Trainspotting', 'The Beach', and '28 Days Later'" -- is going to get people's attention. Slumdog alone will. People realizing the same guy was behind all of those could entice them to see a movie marketed that way.
the average movie goer simply hasn't seen Brick or The Brothers Bloom. I saw both when they came out and enjoyed both quite a bit. But most people just don't know of them to appreciate, over appreciate, or under appreciate them/the director. So, Rian Johnson is by no means a marketable name imo. Not among the general populace anyhow.
"From the director of 'Brick' and 'The Brothers Bloom'" is going to get a "uhh, never saw 'em" from the average person.

That was in no way lafta's original intention, he just pulled that out of his ass when people universally agreed that Danny Boyle wasn't under appreciated.

this makes very little sense...so only movies that everyone has heard of/seen can be under appreciated?

perhaps. But who's to really say? except for lafta, and you're just going to say he's making it up on the spot if he does say that's what he meant. So maybe we should decide for ourselves.
Quote : | "this makes very little sense...so only movies that everyone has heard of/seen can be under appreciated?" |
It makes perfect sense in the context i had. I prefaced the entire post with a statement that should have put it in the context of what I believed to be lafta's original intent.
You're right that how well known it is has nothing to do with whether or not it's appreciated to any degree by those who have seen it. But I'd still disagree and say that both of those movies are very appreciated by those who have seen them, especially Brick. And in turn, he's appreciated for directing them.
i was pointing out that someone has to know that something exists and has to have experienced it in order to appreciate it to any degree. In the context to which I was speaking, and with that in mind, Rian Johnson is not under, over, or simply appreciated by the average movie goer. His work is just unknown to most people.
Again, the preface to that entire response
Quote : | "i'd disagree if we're going with lafta's original intention of directors that should have more marketable names." |
Regardless of whether or not that's what he really intended, that the perspective I was coming from.

secondly
