If I were the family and I truly cared about homeless people, I would sue for $25 million to be donated to the homeless shelter by the city to get homeless people off the streets beaches.

1. It's very difficult to care for grown family members who have mental illnesses or substance abuse issues. Until you've been through it yourself, I suggest you refrain from judging.

2. I don't believe they've mentioned anything about race. The key issue they're pushing is the man's homelessness and the city's reaction to his death. The woman who ran him over got eight driving violations between 2004 and 2008 (including running a red light). Now, she runs over a man (who was not moving) on the job, and the city responds by doing nothing to her and simply issuing a statement that they're not liable for what happened.

It's fucked up.

My uncle, who has passed away, was Schizophrenic. Once someone has reached adulthood, it is very difficult to force a person to seek treatment or take medication regularly. It's not unusual for someone with mental illness or substance abuse problems to just disappear and lose contact with family for months at the time.
