In case you know I meant some other kind of range.

But yea, some buddies of mine want to go to a range, rent a guy, and shoot blindly at targets. Yes I understand they sound like great people, you don't have to say it. I live on Tryon currently, what are some good gun ranges in the area that you lovely people might give a thumbs up to?

But, uh, do you recommend it?

I mean I can put my finger on a random Google Map range but I just wanted to see if TWW had any gun-enthusiast reviews.

I haven't shot anywhere here in the Raleigh area. I just know that I've passed by that one lots.

Personal Defense and Handgun on Tryon/70 (just cross over 70 and you're there), Davi's off of Spring Forest is ok as well.

slightly off topic but i recommend deep river sporting clays for shotguns if you want to shoot at a moving target. been there several times, have fun despite me being horrible at it.

It's a shooting range, what else do you need to know? You take a little gun safety test, pay a fee, rent your pistols, guy the ammo and some targets and you're good to go.

You need to come down to Fayetteville. I can think of 3 right off the bat that I'd recommend.

Guns Plus has the widest array of rental guns - probably 75-100 available for just slightly more than the cost of the ammo.

Range37 has an AWESOME facility. Short of indoors with A/C it can't be beat. Take a class, kill a day, come out feeling like a man. Can recommend the carbine course - you'll put about 800-1000 rounds down range while being instructed from SEALs and rangers

TigerSwan is supposed to be open by now but I haven't been over there. They're actually financed by the USMC Marines can come and take certification courses there. Open to the public (supposedly) on the weekends.

There's also Jims right in the heart of Skibo - best Indoor range I've seen around; but they have retarded hours on the weekend. I think they close at like 2PM on Sat/Sun.

[Edited on August 28, 2010 at 5:52 PM. Reason : Jims]

^^I mean, quality of the facility, price, and gun variety is pretty different from what I've heard, and I just wanted to get some perspective on it from people who actually use ranges, which is a pretty good amount of tdubbers.

Also I'm kind of known to over-think and research every little thing BECAUSE I CAN.

I have a VIP gold membership at PDHSC. Non mebers are gonna pay $15m a person to sue the range, but they do nto time limit your range time. Gun rentals are an addition $5 per gun/per user plus ammo. So 2 folks, 1 lane, 1 gun, is 30+10+ammo

I go to PDHSC as well, would definitely recommend them as a gun owner. You may find it is a little cheaper elsewhere in Raleigh but the guys there are very knowledgeable and you can shoot as long as you want for the $15, which is better than most places with an hour limit. If you plan on renting, the big cost to you will be ammo which is marked up at any gun range you go to and if you rent their gun you MUST use their ammo (this is the same at every range I've been to).

As far as the quality of the actual range, PDHSC is fairly well lit, I have been to a couple outside of NC that were better lit, and smoke doesn't ever seem to build up enough to affect me. It is usually a comfortable temperature and all.

tl;dr: as a gun OWNER definitely recommend PDHSC, not sure on cheaper ranges as a RENTER if money is your only consideration

I went to the Wake County range but didn't like it. They were way too militant about how to shoot and store your weapons. I got yelled at for 5 minutes because I tried to case a glock with the slide locked back and the magazine removed after cease fire was called. The first officer grabbed my gun out of my hand and then placed it down with the barrel pointed back at us, and then proceeded to bitch at me about how I can't touch a firearm two seconds after they yell range dead. Then, two more officers walked over and bitched at both of us for having a handgun not pointing downrange. From now on, I'm going to go shoot out in the country on private land in order to avoid that level of retardedness.

pdhsc
davi's (is their range open yet?)
eagle 1
waco range (not the best idea though)

pdhsc is probably the cheapest/best and the guys are knowledgeable.... but it can get really busy, the staff can be dickish, and some of them will make up bullshit when getting into firearm law related discussions. ha.

^^This is true. They are all semi-militant christian conservatives. They are real knowledgeable about guns but get into a potentially political discussion at your own risk.

Since we have all the gun nuts in a single thread...

Where's the best place locally to take a CCW class?

Wake county offers classes.

So does PDHSC.

The county is like $40 cheaper I think.

Neither place includes the actual License though

I knew the license was $80 or so in addition to the class.

I'd found this place on the interwebs but was hoping for something a little closer. If only Wake Co. had a couple more classes, because the next 2 don't work with my schedule.

Ideally I'd like a place with more advanced classes as well so if I like the instructor I can continue with them. Taking a class once a year (and range time) seems like a good idea just in case I ever have to put the CCWP to good use.

Also, of the poli sci majors I have met I would not trust them around me with a gun, much less teaching a CCW class.

^there's not really a more advanced class/instructor. it's all the same material.

PDHSC does lessons on a few different levels, though it's nothing that's really structured or something you keep repeating... I mean you could keep getting lessons to get started then every now and then just as a check... unless you want to learn about competitive shooting, etc.

otherwise, instructors typically just do the classes, not lessons, though some may. PDHSC's class is probably the most expensive around. Rush does a good job as well. I have a list of all instructors in wake county somewhere, it's a few years old by now. I can find it for you if you want it. I'd recommend Rush or the guy I took it with.... I'll have to find his info.

what about a place to shoot some high powered rifles, not just handguns? My .302 has just been sitting for a few years

As far as more advanced stuff, I saw that a bunch of places had defensive handgun type courses and thought it might be a good idea.

I've been to the one on Tryon road. I'm not a huge shooting enthusiast but I have no complaints about that place.

personal defense used to be alright in my book. Some of the guys that work there are cool, but there are a couple that are total douchenozzles. they made me pay 20 bucks because I had my gf in there watching me shoot (she never even touched a gun).

I also don't like that they won't let me shoot my shotguns in there... they let some people (their personal friends mostly) shoot them, and not others - and I am responsible and have never hit a carrier, which is their supposed reasoning

also, it is pretty expensive to shoot there. I bought one of the gold memberships and after the first year decided not to renew as I didn't go there enough to justify the cost. I just wait and go shoot at friends land now, where I can shoot what I want, how I want.
