^^My thought too, but when you look at the photo again you see the State Fair is going on. This rating is, "Best Place to Raise a Family." Children like the fair. At least they didn't show the Art Tower on Capital Blvd. Pullen Park would have been a good choice though.

True, but they probably could have gotten a photo of the Andy Griffith statue, or something like that. It really is no big deal though.

What's wrong with Dorton arena? It's a pretty influential example of modern architecture and an easily recognizable Raleigh landmark. 9/3/2010 1:55:08 PM |

In 1957, the American Institute of Architects declared the arena one of the top 10 20th-century buildings most expected to influence the future of American architecture. It was listed as a National Historic Monument in 1972 and The National Park Service says the building has been acclaimed internationally for its innovative fusion of architecture and engineering. Its two tilted parabolic arch design, perimeter support columns, and cable system provides an unobstructed view from anywhere inside." |

"expected to influence"...
so what famous architect or noteworthy style of architecture did Dorton Arena, or its architect, actually influence?

Nowicki’s influence is evident in subsequent work of these two architects. Themes of function, structure and humanism resonated differently in each. All three of these interconnected individuals were engaged in the same intellectual milieu, each manifesting his own architecture in a unique yet contextual way. Taken as a whole, their endeavors stand as evidence of the shifting understanding of what modern architecture was about." |

Saarinen's work includes the well-known Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri, the Trans World Airlines Terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, and the Dulles International Airport Terminal in Chantilly, Virginia. Some of his other equally fascinating architectural examples include Case Study House #9 (designed with Charles Eames) in Pacific Palisades, California, the Kresge Auditorium and Chapel at MIT, the Irwin Miller House in Columbus, Indiana, Kramer Chapel in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center. This is only a partial list of Saarinen's architectural accomplishments. " |

Thx man. I thought it was pretty cool when I found the link between NCSU and Eero Saarinen. If you watch Mad Men you'll see quite a bit of his iconic furniture. I've seen quite a few of these side chairs:
As well as these conference tables and chairs with the "tulip base":

If any of you are in the Raleigh area you should really check out the Gregg Museum this fall.

For four years it's been that place in Talley.
If Talley were nicer, I'd probably want to go there more often. 9/3/2010 11:10:01 PM |
