My ancestors came here in the 1920's and worked in a meat canning plant in Philadelphia. I don't think they had any opportunities to mingle with American Indians.

the most recent member of my family from the Carolinas is my mother's father, who moved to the Mohawk Valley in New York and had several children, including my mother, from two marriages; then Mom married a man whose family had been in upstate New York for a few generations and had children, including me, during his medical residency on the Jersey shore; then they moved to a small town in the Midwest and I have lived in that region most of my life

so I'm not some peckerwood from the Carolinas or Georgia (I have no known family from Georgia)

you'd be surprised the number of people who are "white" yet are (almost always) 1/8 native american, even though their grandparents don't look a damn bit indian at all (since they'd be half). Also, the tribe is always cherokee, and some times blackfoot, but rarely any of the other many many many tribes that existed in the area. I wonder why that is

more specifically, it makes white rednecks feel more self-important if they can identify with some group they feel expresses a nobility their own family lacks.

also, i think it relieves them of having to personally own any of the guilt that White America collectively has for decimating our country's native population in such an inhumane manner.
